We are advertising for a six month vacancy for a Trust Doctor at the registrar (ST3+) level at Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust. It is intended that the candidate will commence in April 2025 and will be in post till the end of September 2025. The post will provide experience in Trauma and in one or more sub-specialty of elective orthopaedics. Although not a recognised training post, there are considerable training and educational opportunities for the successful candidate.
There is a comprehensive induction and regular weekly teaching with the intention that the service commitment, supervision level and educational opportunities will be equivalent to that of our existing trainees and is equivalent to a training post in every way. The post carries an educational commitment from the Department of T&O. The successful candidate will be given an Assigned Educational Supervisor and a Clinical Supervisor and be expected to complete regular workplace-based assessments to ensure that portfolios are kept up to date and subsequent applications into more permanent post or in national training schemes have a higher chance of success.
This is a limited time appointment and the candidate may not get the subspeciality placement of their choice but will have the same exposure to the general trauma as trainees from HEE Yorkshire and Humber. The successful candidate may wish to and is encouraged to participate in the research, audit and academic opportunities available in the department. The successful candidate will participate in the on call rota for T&O. They will have several opportunities for dedicated training in elective and emergency theatre alongside specialist and general outpatient clinics.
The post holder must be fully registered with GMC and hold a current license to practice. All medical staff employed by the Trust are expected to comply with regional and appropriate Trust health and safety policies. The Foundation Trust aims to design and implement services, policies and measures that meet the diverse needs of our service, population and workforce, ensuring that none are placed at a disadvantage over others. The post is based at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust but to enable cross cover of colleagues some cross site working will be necessary. Office accommodation will be provided in the post holders base unit.
Each Division has a Divisional Director who is supported by Director of Operations, along with finance, personnel and information technology support. Each Directorate has a Clinical Director who is supported by an operational team with finance, personnel and Informatics support. The specialties available for placement sit within the Division of Surgery and Anesthetics.
The Divisional Director is Mr. William Ainslie, Consultant General Surgeon and the Director of Operations is Mr. Thomas Strickland. The Clinical Director for T&O is Mr. Simon Sturdee, and the General Manager is Mrs. Jane Peacock. We have secretarial support at both hospital sites. All Consultants have access to office accommodation which includes access to the intranet and internet.
Duties of the post:
1. On Call Rota 1 in 12 on-call rota, non resident on call and a 1:12 Split weekend on call.
2. You will have a fixed week day on call 1:3 weeks.
3. Trauma Lists: You will be assigned to a weekly Trauma list which is always consultant supervised and led.
4. Extensive non-operative clinical experience: The successful candidate will gain exposure to virtual fracture clinics, Fracture clinics to see new and follow-up patients and sub-speciality clinics in elective orthopaedics alongside their consultant.
The contract will be full time 40 hours per week, please note that part time hours are also available. In addition to this there will be specific rota enhancements inclusive of additional rostered hours, weekend allowance, night premium and on-call availability. Please note this will depend on the grade and speciality that you are allocated.
Important Note: The Trust encourages the development of innovative service models that support our ambition to provide improved access and choice for patients. It is envisaged that in time all medical staff will have an allocation of normal time duties at weekends or outside normal core hours. The post holder will be expected to engage in developing such changes and will be supported to do so.
Emergency Duties:
The post-holder will participate in a 1 in 8 rota providing senior support to the departments at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and Calderdale Royal Hospital. This support includes attendance at Trauma Calls and attending the department when requested by senior on-site medical or nursing staff. The post-holder would be expected to provide cover for absent colleagues on planned periods of leave and for short-term unexpected absences to help maintain the continuity of the Service. To this end, they would be expected to liaise with their colleagues in planning leave.
It is expected that the post-holder will have an interest in and active role in teaching. The Departments are involved in teaching medical staff of all grades as well as medical students. The post-holder will be expected to participate in delivery of the weekly junior and middle grade teaching programmes. From time to time, there may be the requirement to provide clinical training to medical students and paramedics undertaking attachments to the Department.
In the main, these activities will be delivered concurrently with normal clinical activities, rather than in addition to these. The appointment will be subject to the Terms and Conditions of Service for NHS Doctors and Dentists in Training (England) 2016. The base salary for the role will be £ gross per annum (effective April 2024). Any enhancements in addition to your base salary would be dependent upon your rota commitments.
The rota is subject to change in line with service demands. Annual leave entitlement is as per national Terms and Conditions of Service. Arrangement to take annual leave must be made with clinical colleagues. The Divisional Director/Clinical Lead and the local rota co-ordinator should be notified accordingly.
The successful applicants will be required to undergo an Enhanced Disclosure with the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
