About The Natalie Kate Moss Trust
The Natalie Kate Moss Trust ‘NKMT’ was established in 2012 by the Moss family following the unexpected passing of Natalie at the age of 26 due to a sudden Brain Haemorrhage. The trust's mission is to transform this tragedy into something positive by working to better prevent and treat brain haemorrhages.
Every year there are 4.6 million cases of brain haemorrhages and sadly only 3 out of 5 patients will survive within one month after experiencing one, with 3 million deaths occurring every year as a result of haemorrhagic stroke.
What’s worse, these statistics haven’t changed in 40 years; in contrast breast cancer survival has doubled in that same period, with four out of five patients surviving at 10 years. Something must be done.
Prevention
Not all brain haemorrhages can be prevented. But some can be.
At ‘NKMT’ we firmly believe that we can prevent more, potentially preventable, brain haemorrhages from occurring through educating and empowering more people to better understand why brain haemorrhages happen so that they can take back control of their own health.
One of leading causes of brain haemorrhages, and one of the most modifiable causes, is high blood pressure, yet on average a third of the population has high blood pressure and 50% of people are undiagnosed, leaving them at significant risk of a brain haemorrhage, particularly as high blood pressure shows no symptoms.
Therefore, NKMT works to better educate on the importance of blood pressure management, whilst advocating for more regular checks.
Treatment
Since 2012, NKMT has been working in partnership with The University of Manchester to help fund their groundbreaking research and over the last 13 years, the research has gone from strength to strength.
As a result of their growth, in 2021 the team at Manchester University launched the Geoffrey Jefferson Brain Research Centre to help raise the profile of their research, increase funding and attract the brightest talent to Manchester, all to provide better outcomes and transform the lives of patients with stroke and other brain conditions.
The team have even developed a treatment which has been rolled out to the NHS and proven to reduce mortality at one month by a third.
Our aim as a charity is to continue to support this research to help find treatments in order to improve the outcome after someone has a brain haemorrhage.
