The Intensive Care Department forms part of the Anaesthetics & theatres departments.
The post holder will join the existing team of 6 intensive care consultants at Queen's hospital providing anaestheticand critical care support to a wide range of surgical specialties. There is a 1:7 service week rota with opportunities for anaesthetic list to suit interests at the Royal Derby Hospital. There is an example job plan in the attached Job Description.
Work was completed on the QHB Site ICU in 2020. There are 8 funded Level ICU beds
The Adult ITU at Queens Hospital in Burton houses 14 mixed dependency beds. This is up to 8 Level 3 beds. Conveniently located opposite main theatres the units open office space is allocated on the unit with appropriate secretarial support. We admit over 500 patients per year and take pride in being GPICS compliant. We have will have 7 consultant staff, although this offers a frequent on-call the level of acuity is in keeping with a small, but busy, acute hospital site.
The Anaesthetics Department co-ordinates the provision of a comprehensive anaesthetic and intensive care service to all UHDB Hospitals. The Anaesthetic Department is a part of the Surgical Services Directorate comprising Anaesthesia, Surgery and Trauma & Orthopaedics.
In addition to any specialist interests all consultants will be involved in providing a general clinical service to the Trust.

The job plan will be agreed between the appointee & the Assistant Clinical Director, on behalf of the Executive Medical Director.
The duties will be subject to review from time to time in light of the changing requirements of the service. If alterations to the duties are required these will be mutually agreed between the appointee & the Assistant Clinical Director with the approval of the Clinical Director.
All job plans are reviewed annually following team & individual job planning meetings. The appointee will be expected to participate in this.
The job plan is a prospective agreement setting out a consultant’s duties, responsibilities & objectives for the coming year. It covers all aspects of professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education & managerial responsibilities. It provides a clear schedule of commitments both internal & external. In addition, it includes personal objectives, including details of their link to wider service objectives & details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan & objectives.
The job plan for the first 3 months is on average 10 programmed activities per week. The ICU commitment is based on the provisional timetable shown below & reviewed following an appraisal meeting. It is recognised that the balance of the job plan will need to be discussed with the appointee.
The role may involve activities at Royal Derby Hospital and Queens Hospital, Burton, there is a 1:7 oncall commitment.
