Overview of the job
This is a non-operational role supporting the Waste Management function. The job holder will be required to support meeting the waste management needs of their chosen establishment by collecting, processing and disposing of waste materials from all areas of the establishment in the most appropriate and effective way, with regard to legislative compliance and environmental issues.
The role may have prisoner contact with parties of prisoners in their area of work as the role will be expected to work with prisoners. The role will not have responsibility for supervising prisoners or areas of work. This is a rotational role.
Summary
The job holder will be responsible for carrying out day-to-day activities within the Waste Management unit, providing general advice and guidance to staff on how to manage waste more effectively and actively promote recycling within the establishment.
Responsibilities, Activities and Duties
1. Supporting the waste management needs of their chosen establishment by collecting, processing and disposing of waste materials. Actively contribute to recycling/waste efficiency meetings and Sustainable Development Committee Meetings.
2. Log materials used and assist with stocktaking of tools, equipment, and materials. Undertake the role of banksman directing the operation of some plant equipment or machinery.
3. Inform management to ensure sufficient levels of stock are maintained. Advise on sufficient levels of stock and request procurement of goods and services, ensuring all materials used are logged and fit for purpose.
4. Ensure allocated planned maintenance and small repairs are carried out, undertaking service requests raised via the computer-aided facilities management system and carrying out project work when required.
5. Escort technical contractors when required, in accordance with Local Security Strategy (LSS). Maintain regular communications via radio net in accordance with LSS. Liaise with contractors when ordering services, including skip collection.
6. Be responsible for tools and plant machinery, carrying out checks at regular intervals and completing relevant documentation in accordance with Local Security Strategy (LSS) and National Security Framework (NSF).
7. Comply with Health & Safety policies, procedures, and legislation to ensure statutory and mandatory compliance.
8. Drive estates vehicles and operate plant equipment, as well as assembling products on site when required.
9. Operate within command mode in line with local contingency plans. Undertake incidental and emergency or urgent tasks and assignments as per Service Delivery Agreement timescales in a safe manner.
10. Carry out pest control prevention measures across the estate when required, including carrying out insect control measures within the work area.
11. Contribute to prisoner reports including parole and sentence planning.

An ability to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence through the medium of English or (where specified in Wales) Welsh.

You will need to undergo and clear pre-employment checks. This will include His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service Enhanced Level 2 vetting, and due to the security status of HMP Woodhill, Counter-Terrorism Check (CTC vetting) is also required.
Proof that you have been a resident in the UK for the last 3 years is needed to complete the CTC vetting process.
However, if you have been out of the country for a significant period of time (usually up to one year) and maintained your UK residency, you may still be considered for vetting clearance.
