About the role As our first dedicated Quality Engineer, you'll be responsible for establishing and owning quality across our entire product surface. You'll collaborate closely with engineers, designers, and product leads to build the systems, tooling, and processes that ensure a consistent, high-quality experience. You'll also work directly with our community and support teams, helping to triage bugs, investigate issues in the wild, and turn reports into insights that improve our platform. This is a hands-on role: you'll write tests, build tools, design automation pipelines, and help establish standards that ensure every user interaction, from drawing a shape to syncing across sessions, is rock solid. What You'll Do Define and own the end-to-end quality strategy across tldraw's products and SDK Build and maintain our testing strategy Partner with engineers to make our codebase more testable and observable Facilitate exploratory testing sessions with engineers and stakeholders to uncover gaps, edge cases, and behavioral expectations Debug and reproduce complex bugs across the frontend, canvas, real-time sync, and more Work with the community and clients to triage and prioritize user-reported issues Analyze bugs, incidents, and regressions to drive systemic improvements Create tools and processes that help engineers ship confidently and catch issues early About You You have strong engineering fundamentals and know how to build and test software systems that are reliable, maintainable, and user-centric You have 5 years of experience in QA, test engineering, or a similar technical role You've worked with modern testing tools like Playwright, Vitest, Jest, or Cypress You've built and maintained CI workflows You've tested and supported complex interactive frontend apps, ideally with React or canvas-based UIs You know how to lead exploratory sessions that help teams clarify expectations, explore behaviors, and spot edge cases early You care about quality as a product experience, not just a pass/fail checkbox You're excited to work closely with our community and know how to turn vague bug reports into reproducible cases You thrive in async-first, high-autonomy environments Bonus: Experience with performance testing, visual diffing
