The consultant team are supported by 10 ST3+ registrars, 10 ST1/Foundation Trainees, 1 ANP and a team of Clinical Nurse Specialists. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED The post holder should be fully registered and ideally have some experience in general paediatric surgery or paediatrics with at least 6 months NHS experience or equivalent. It is also an excellent opportunity for those with an interest to gain such experience. DUTIES OF THE POST The Doctor will support in a rolling 1:10 rota and be involved in covering all aspects of inpatient care including on-call, ward cover and night shifts. During other duty periods, the post holder will be involved in other aspects of the paediatric surgical service, including attending outpatient clinics, theatres and will also have exposure to other activities within the department including opportunities for quality improvement, audit and contributions to clinical governance work. LEVELS OF RESPONSIBILITY The post holder will support the on call rota equivalent to ST1-ST2. The Doctor will be rotated to cover the paediatric surgical ward on 42, surgical newborn unit, outliers, ED, LCAT (short stay) units and theatres or clinics. This gives ample opportunity to see the breadth of patients in paediatric surgery and manage them both in an elective and emergency context. There are several theatre lists both emergency and elective on a daily basis and clinics most days. All are encouraged to go to take advantage of any of these as per their choice and availability. All trainees are allocated a clinical supervisor within the department and if they do not have an educational supervisor in their rotation are allocated one within the department as well. All trainees should attend the daily morning handover at 8:00- 8:30am and join the ward round if they are not going to either theatre or clinic. TEACHING AND RESEARCH/STUDY AND TRAINING Participation in departmental teaching and ward based teaching of medical students is expected in this post. to and attendance at the weekly departmental handover meeting every Thursday along with teaching activity and monthly Governance meetings are mandatory.
