About the job:
As a key member of the Senior Driver Management Team, you will lead and develop the strategy for delivering train crew across GWR's Driver and On Train functions. You'll ensure that our train plan is safely and effectively met by devising the strategy that ensures all depots across the network have the right resources at the right time to meet current and future timetable needs.
Investment in rail infrastructure and service transformation requires us to continuously review the way we mobilise and allocate our train crew resource to ensure we meet the needs of the business and deliver for our customers. Excellent stakeholder management and collaboration skills are key to ensuring successful delivery of our strategy.
This role bridges the gap of train diagram formulation, train crew rostering and utilisation of train crew, providing a single overview that ensures diagrams are not only efficient but linkable and meet employee resource.
Your main responsibilities will be:
* Overall delivery of strategy for train crew depots across all regions in GWR.
* Provision of adequate competent resources to deliver the train plan across GWR.
* Work closely with the Train Planning Unit to understand future timetable plans to discern its impact on establishment requirements. Work directly with Recruitment and HR to ensure that adequate recruitment is maintained to meet establishment needs within required timescales.
* Provide overall governance and project management of the timetable change process as it pertains to the Driver and On Train resource.
* Provide oversight for accommodation improvement initiatives to ensure suitability for future workforce changes.
* Meet business reporting expectations as required by the DFT.
* Work closely with all individual depots to ensure that they are on track to get train crew competent as efficiently as possible.
* Responsibility for a team that delivers the various train crew workforce plans and train crew optimisation.
* Work tactically each timetable change to deliver the longer-term strategy.
* Attend union meetings at various levels to communicate train crew strategy going forward, while maintaining a positive relationship with train crew representatives, ensuring that they understand and are advised of any significant changes that impact their members.
* Identify workforce planning and recruitment requirements for all depots in the most cost-effective manner.
* Participate in the Operations/On Trains On-call roster as required.
You will need to be:
* Pro-active and driven to achieve results.
* An excellent forward planner with ability to identify and resolve anticipated problems.
* Able to analyse and optimise resource through the use of various industry tools. Examples of such skills include roster formulation, crew and unit diagram production, workforce planning principles and project management.
* Confident presenter able to articulate and ‘sell' a vision to key stakeholders and influence on the deliverables of the Driver and On-Board functions.
* Able to think analytically and develop logical solutions and perform at a strategic level.
* Able to demonstrate commitment to continuous improvement and proven ability to successfully implement change which impacts working practices.
* An analytical thinker who can develop logical solutions and perform at a strategic level.
As a minimum you will need to have:
* Budgetary management experience.
* Experience of delivering strategic objectives and targets within a large organisation, while successfully implementing new procedures and ways of working.
* Experience of working successfully with Trade Union representatives and effective people management; preferably having worked with Train crew.
* Proven experience of operating at senior management level within a large organisation.
* Good IT skills, particularly M/Soft Word & Excel.
