This is an exceptional opportunity to be involved in the governance of one of the best universities in the world. At the University of Edinburgh, we’ve been making a positive impact for more than 400 years.
The University of Edinburgh employs over 17,000 people and has a budget in excess of £1.4 billion. We are seeking to appoint at least two individuals to the University’s governing body, the University Court. These voluntary positions are equivalent to non-executive directors, and as such they contribute at the highest levels of the University, using their professional expertise and experience to support, question, and advise the University’s executive leadership on key strategic matters. The broader engagement of Court members in the rich and varied life of the University is also welcomed.
An institution as large, complex and successful as ours needs Court members who can make a positive impact on the University’s most challenging strategic issues. We are looking for senior leaders with experience of working in or with organisations of comparable scale and complexity, in any sector. Applications are particularly welcomed from people with skills and experience in finance, estates and digital/information technology, but also from those with other professional backgrounds with suitable senior leadership experience.
As a world leading institution, the University of Edinburgh has a longstanding and continuing commitment to equality and diversity and recognises the vital role that this plays in ensuring our success as a great civic institution. We particularly welcome applications that would improve the gender balance of the University Court, and/or from members of ethnic minorities and other traditionally under-represented groups.
Practicalities:
The University Court meets five times a year. Members of Court often serve on at least one committee and there is currently a demand in the Estates Committee (which covers both the physical and digital estates), Audit & Risk Committee and Policy & Resources Committee. Members may also serve on working groups considering specific strategic matters. While the positions are unremunerated, the University will meet all reasonable costs associated with membership of Court and other activities on behalf of the University, including child and other dependent care costs. Appointments are typically for four years in the first instance with the possibility of extension for a further four years by mutual agreement. All interested candidates are warmly invited to apply. Please note that applicants cannot be current University of Edinburgh staff or students, who have separate appointment routes.
Closing date: noon on Friday 14 March 2025.
Interview date: Monday 14 April 2025 (in-person).
