What is the opportunity?
The role is an Infrastructure SQL DBA within the Infrastructure & Operations department, providing technical MS SQL expertise to support the aims and objectives of the Technology function.
Working within the DBA operations team, led by the DBA team lead, the role will contribute to the security, availability, performance, and end-to-end support of all MS SQL services. The successful candidate will split their time between BAU & project work and will undertake support and development of both RBC Brewin Dolphin’s on-premise and cloud-based MS SQL systems (mixture of vendor / internally developed), working closely with other operations and development teams.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with strong MS SQL skills to acquire further experience managing a mature on-premise database estate with increasing involvement in cutting-edge cloud technologies.
What will you do?
* Work within a team (4) of in-house DBAs to support around 1,500 databases / 200 MS SQL database servers across production and test environments.
* Cover early and late shifts in office (08:00 to 18:00) and out-of-hours cover on a rota system.
* Support the business via ServiceNow ITSM system, resolving logged support calls within agreed SLAs.
* Perform proactive monitoring of the SQL Server estate, ensuring system availability and performance.
* Support all database releases, adhering to change management processes.
* Install and upgrade to the latest version of SQL Server.
* Provide tactical and strategic solutions focusing on database design, scalability, availability, security, and performance enhancements.
What do you need to succeed?
Must-have
* Proven experience in all aspects of database management with versions of MS SQL Server up to 2022 and Azure DB.
* Knowledge and experience in delivering database solutions, working collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams with a focus on building highly available services in a rapidly-changing hybrid hosted capacity.
* Ability to support large-scale SQL data infrastructures.
* Experience working as an operationally focused DBA, including utilizing an ITIL-based ITSM system (ServiceNow preferable).
* Awareness of CI/CD processes, including automated DevOps release management pipelines & next generation tooling (VSTS, etc.).
* Ability to ensure business continuity by developing and implementing highly available database systems, disaster recovery, and database backup and recovery plans and procedures, both on-premise and in Azure.
Nice-to-have
* Experience with virtualization technologies (VMware).
