Job overview
As a Band 7 Colorectal Straight to Test Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), you will play a key role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care within the Two-Week Wait (2WW) Gastrointestinal (GI) Clinic. You will be responsible for supporting service users referred through the Urgent Suspected Cancer Pathway, ensuring timely assessment, diagnostic accuracy, and appropriate management decisions. This role demands advanced clinical expertise, strong communication skills, and autonomous decision-making to optimise patient outcomes throughout the diagnostic pathway.
Main duties of the job
* You will deliver evidence-based practice, clinical diagnostic protocols, and use highly advanced communication skills in supporting patients throughout the diagnostic pathway; using advanced clinical assessment skills to ensure relevant clinical information is available to the multidisciplinary team.
* You will use specialist nursing knowledge to review and interpret all clinical investigatory results and determine the next pathway stage, including discharge and referral back to GP, or referral to specialist services as required.
* You will demonstrate a higher level of practice, at Masters level 7, through the provision of specialist nursing knowledge and expertise in the delivery of diagnostic pathways, including all GI (Gastrointestinal) suspected cancer, if needed to cover other specialty.
* You will assess various patient groups, including those referred via Faster Diagnosis Standard or Routine pathway safely and effectively, applying History Taking and Physical Assessment skills, and prescribe necessary medications such as bowel preparation, as an Independent Non-Medical Prescriber.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
* First level degree in a related subject.
* Evidence of Masters Level 7 learning.
* Independent Non-medical Prescribing Qualification.
* Research Qualification.
RELEVANT EXPERIENCE
* Minimum of 3 years relevant post-registration experience in cancer/surgical/GI/endoscopy nursing. Minimum of 2 years’ experience at band 6.
* Evidence of teaching experience, either formally or in informal settings.
* Knowledge of NHS operational and strategic issues and their impact on colorectal services.
* Knowledge and understanding of colorectal cancer pathways including 2ww/FDS routes.
* Previous experience of working as a Clinical Nurse Specialist.
* Evidence of sound organisation, leadership, and management.
SKILLS AND ABILITY
* Excellent communication skills including the ability to assess patients over the telephone using advanced listening skills.
* Advanced clinical decision-making skills involving the patient’s informed choices.
* History taking and physical assessment skills.
* Teaching/assessment and presentation skills.
* Evidence of implementing changes within practice.
