Job overview
This is a key role in delivering quality improvement in the NHS. The post holder will have lead responsibility for the operational management of Clinical Governance/Risk Management to enable safe, effective practice and service delivery within the Maternity, neonatal and gynaecology department.
Instrumental in monitoring and supporting performance and local delivery of excellence in midwifery, nursing and clinical care. The post holder will work in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, to develop and implement future strategic direction and initiatives to ensure local families continue to receive high quality safe care.
The post holder will participate in the senior midwifery team on call rota.
Main duties of the job
1. To provide professional and managerial support to the Director of Midwifery in relation to Clinical Risk and Governance and patient safety.
2. Responsibility for coordinating the day-to-day Maternity Clinical Governance and Risk Management, including reporting of incidents to MBBRACE.
3. The post holder will be expected to provide specialist support and leadership to staff across the Directorate with regard to Risk Management and Clinical Governance.
4. To coordinate and provide leadership support for any ‘Serious Incidents’ that occur across the Directorate and monitor completion of actions.
5. Take lead for monitoring effectiveness of Maternity Services and leading on any changes in service necessary to meet these requirements in conjunction with the Director of Midwifery/Divisional Manager and Clinical Director in relation to Maternity Services.
6. Proactively take responsibility for monitoring effectiveness of neonatal and gynaecology services and leading on any changes in service necessary to meet these requirements in conjunction with the Director of Midwifery/Divisional Manager and Clinical Director.
7. Oversight and management of the maternity screening team and leadership to ensure maintenance of national screening compliance.
8. Responsibility for coordination of Clinical Audits within Maternity, gynaecology and neonatal in liaison with the Governance Department and clinical teams as required.
9. Explore current practices to identify areas for development, planning the appropriate change using evidence-based principles and evaluate the outcomes in line with the Trust’s Governance Strategy.

Person specification
Skills and ability
* Experience as Senior Midwife or Nurse in an acute NHS environment.
* Evidence of working with Local Maternity and neonatal Systems and Strategic Clinical Networks.
* Experience as a Matron/Clinical Midwifery/ Nurse Manager managing clinical teams.
* Proven record in initiating, evaluating and sustaining change.
* Experience of transformation and national agendas within maternity and neonatal.
* Experience of co-production and working with MNVP.
Qualifications
* Registered Midwife or Nurse.
* Degree in midwifery/ Nursing.
* Masters level study in health-related subject (or working towards).
* Evidence of recent post-registration continuous professional development/ qualification.
* Professional midwifery advocate.
Experience
* Knowledge of clinical governance and risk management.
* Ability to coordinate and liaise with multidisciplinary services at senior level.
* Experience of quality improvement/ change management.
* Experience in midwifery education/ teaching.
* Experience of team building.
Knowledge
* Possess expertise in the concept of Clinical Governance, Quality Improvement and evidence-based practice associated with the portfolio.
* Can demonstrate working knowledge of relevant statute, intercollegiate guidance, literature, research and legislation relating to quality and safety of patient care, with a clear understanding and knowledge of National Policy directives/ changes associated with nursing / midwifery practice.
* Able to think strategically and translate vision for local service into delivery by collaboration and partnership.
