Job Description:
The No.2 Mechanic in Formula 1 supports the No.1 Mechanic in preparing and maintaining the race car. They assist with car build, maintenance, and servicing, support pit stops, and address car issues during races. They also attend F1 events, keep detailed records of car parts, and collaborate with the team to provide feedback on car performance.
What you will be doing:
1. Assemble and Disassemble:
o Assemble and disassemble race cars and components as required, ensuring they are built to the agreed standards and that any discrepancies are highlighted and agreed upon.
o Ensure each car is built to the technical specifications and deadlines required.
o Ensure all assemblies are built following the build procedure and that build checklists are completed and visible for inspection.
2. Maintenance and Inspections:
o Perform routine and scheduled maintenance tasks, including engine, transmission, and suspension work.
o Conduct pre-race inspections and ensure all systems are functioning optimally.
3. Race Day Operations:
o Play an active role in pit stops.
o Travel globally to Formula 1 race and test locations, events and working on-site during race weekends.
o Adapt to flexible working hours, including long hours and weekend shifts.
4. Troubleshooting and Problem-Solving:
o Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical issues with the car and equipment.
o Ensure all faults/problems encountered are accurately reported and followed up as appropriate.
5. Compliance and Safety:
o Ensure all work is carried out in compliance with safety regulations and team standards, including specific safety standards and regulations relevant to the role.
6. Collaboration and Communication:
o Collaborate with engineers, drivers, and other team members to optimize car performance.
o Ensure your No.1 Mechanic is regularly briefed, fostering a spirit of two-way communication.
o Foster a positive relationship with factory operations, driving a spirit of teamwork and continuous improvement.
7. Work Area Management:
o Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring all tools, equipment, and car parts are correctly stored and maintained.
8. Support and Development:
o Proactively support others within your crew to complete tasks where required.
o Continuously seek ways to improve team and personal performance.
o Attend the factory and test events as required.
Requirements:
1. Qualifications & Experience:
o Previous motorsport experience as a Mechanic is essential and ideally gained within an F1, WEC, IMSA, Indy Car and Le Mans Series and F2 environment.
o An enthusiastic self-starter, with an ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
o Self-sufficient, able to independently take responsibility for completing tasks and objectives.
o A team player who is comfortable working with internal and external entities.
o Able to adopt a flexible approach to working hours during events and peak times.
o Demonstrate excellent communication skills, with the ability to build relationships and collaborate effectively across departments.
o Knowledge of Microsoft office suite, Outlook, Excel & Word.
o Impeccable attention to detail with the ability to handle multiple projects at the same time.
o Willingness to travel to events internationally.
2. Work Environment Physical Demands:
o Ability to work and prioritize within a high-pressure, time-sensitive environment while retaining a methodical approach is essential.
o Extensive domestic & international travel and a willingness to work long and flexible hours including weekends.
o This position may require lifting heavy objects, repeated bending, squatting, and manual dexterity. The work environment is fast-paced and mentally demanding, involving machinery, race cars, 7-post and other rigs, grinding debris, and hazardous fluids.
o All employees must comply with the Company Health and Safety Policy and all relevant statutory health and safety legislation.
