Our client is seeking a permanent F1 Chief Race Engineer to join their team in Northamptonshire. Reporting to the Head of Performance Engineering, this pivotal role involves managing the Race Engineering group at both the factory and events, with the goal of optimizing race car performance. The position requires extensive travel, including attendance at all tests and races, and periodic support for simulator tests and new car builds.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Event Operations: Ensure the safe operation of both cars during events.
2. Pre-Event Planning: Oversee all planning activities, including setup, run plans, test items, and procedural changes, in collaboration with the Head of Performance Engineering.
3. Team Collaboration: Work closely with engineering crews to achieve event objectives and maximize track time efficiency.
4. Leadership: Guide and direct teams in Strategy, Vehicle Performance, Aero Performance, Tyre Science, Power Unit, and Driver Coaching during events.
5. Strategy Development: Define and refine race strategies, clearly communicating them to engineering crews.
6. Compliance: Maintain a deep understanding of car legality checks and report any issues to the Director of Operations.
7. Coordination: Partner with the Chief Mechanic to ensure smooth event preparation and session operations.
8. FIA Liaison: Handle FIA technical matters at the trackside.
9. Team Meetings: Chair Race Engineering group meetings and oversee the preparation of all written reports.
10. Procedure Development: Develop procedures and test plans, supervise rig tests, and ensure safety compliance across all venues.
11. Additional Duties: Undertake any responsibilities as delegated by the Head of Performance Engineering.
Job Requirements:
1. Education: Engineering degree (minimum 2:1).
2. Experience: Formula 1 trackside experience as a Race Engineer; experience in other formulas is a plus.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
1. Teamwork: Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a positive, can-do attitude.
2. Technical Expertise: Solid background in racing car performance, vehicle dynamics, and race strategy optimization.
3. Regulation Knowledge: Familiarity with FIA Formula 1 Technical and Sporting Regulations.
4. Decision-Making: Ability to manage fine details and make rapid decisions under pressure.
5. Time Management: Efficient workload prioritization and time management skills.
Equipment and Applications:
1. Proficient in ATLAS.
2. Knowledgeable in lap time simulation tools and simulator environments.
3. Skilled in Microsoft Office products.
4. Experience with MATLAB/Simulink.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
This role requires operating in a high-pressure, time-sensitive environment while maintaining a methodical approach. Extensive domestic and international travel is necessary, along with long, flexible hours, including weekends. Physical demands include lifting up to 50 pounds, repeated bending, squatting, and manual dexterity. The work environment involves machinery, race cars, and hazardous materials, requiring strict adherence to Health and Safety regulations and company policies.
