Job Description
Due to a sustained peak of work in our Missions Systems Area, we are looking for an additional Project Engineering Manager to help supervise our class leading Artillery Location System project.
Project Engineering Managers are responsible for the total engineering activity undertaken on projects and manage a cross-disciplined engineering team as well as Project Engineering Leads supervising projects or sub-sections of larger projects of their own. The Project Engineering Manager is tasked with ensuring that the engineering team delivers a solution that is compliant with customer requirements, contractual and legislative requirements. They must effectively plan and manage the engineering effort within any projects they are supervising directly from a performance, schedule, and cost perspective. Additionally, they must support their subordinate Project Engineering Leads to do the same.
Reporting to the Head of Engineering Project, the Project Engineering Manager will contribute to the monthly engineering governance cycle through preparation of engineering status reports. They build strong relationships with Engineering Functional Leads to ensure the resourcing plans within the IPT they supervise are realistic and any issues arising are resolved swiftly. Project Engineering Managers are a vital part of business winning activity, coordinating the collection of engineering costs, preparation of an engineering plan and holding an engineering bid review.
Key Responsibility Areas
1. Responsible for the management of multi-disciplined engineering teams across multiple projects, ensuring delivery of the overall engineering output against time, cost, and performance budgets.
2. Generate clear and relevant engineering plans, establish key milestones, and identify risks, opportunities, and interdependencies.
3. Review current engineering positions on projects and adapt plans as required to mitigate risks to cost, schedule, or performance budgets.
4. Support and supervise subordinate Project Engineering Leads to ensure their projects are managed appropriately.
5. Prepare and communicate monthly engineering status reports for each assigned project and those of subordinates to the Head of Engineering Projects.
6. Coordinate engineering input into bids as part of the business winning process.
7. Represent engineering on the multi-functional management team of the Precision Guidance business area at weekly and monthly progress and reporting meetings.
8. Attend regular monthly Board level Project reviews to report on status and progress.
Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required
The following skills and experience are required:
1. Educated to a degree level in an engineering-related subject (essential).
2. Significant previous experience of managing and/or leading multi-disciplined engineering teams on large scale development projects (essential).
3. Strong understanding and proven track record of engineering lifecycles and processes on technically complex development projects (essential).
4. Previous experience of being a leader of leaders (desirable).
5. A strong understanding and experience of systems integration and testing (desirable).
6. Familiarity with high software content development (essential).
7. Experience of working on the development of hardware electronics, firmware, and mechanical based products (desirable).
8. Experience of Systems Development utilizing SysML and/or UML methodology (desirable).
9. Experience of Software Development utilizing UML, Simulink would be advantageous (desirable).
10. Awareness of safety-related development would be advantageous (desirable).
11. Experience of collaborating with external partners for development (sharing of models, code, etc.) would be advantageous (desirable).
12. Ability to be at Basildon 2 to 3 days per week (on average and flexible) is essential.
13. Willingness to occasionally travel to partner sites across the UK during development is highly desirable.
14. Experience of working within the defence or aerospace industry (desirable).

The candidate must have demonstrable relevant experience and proven success in their previous roles, with well-rounded engineering experience in all phases of the design lifecycle and significant exposure to all aspects of engineering planning.
