Job Title: Laboratory Animal Technologist Physical Location: Kent Campus - Kent, OH Salary: $19.06 per hour Basic Function: Assists veterinarian in charge and researchers with procedures and tests; monitors and records condition of animals. Provides general care for laboratory animals. Reports to Laboratory Animal Supervisor or other designated supervisor. Additional Basic Function – if applicable: Examples of Duties: Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: Assists veterinarian in charge and researchers with procedures and tests (e.g., animal autopsies, tissue preparations, histological tests, etc.). Functions as a lead worker over Laboratory Animal Aides, Laboratory Animal Technicians, and/or student employees assisting with animal care. Provides medical advice to aid veterinarian in charge and researches in decision making. Administers medication and collects specimens. Monitors condition of animals; cares for animals after surgery; provides general animal care. Maintains, prepares, and compiles records and reports; maintains inventory; monitors distribution of controlled medication and equipment. Prepares animals and equipment for surgery; restrains animals when necessary. May performs surgical procedures as requested by veterinarian. May serve on committees and attend meetings. Performs related duties as required. Additional Examples of Duties – if applicable: Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent. A minimum of 18 months experience in a laboratory animal facility. License/Certification: Valid Ohio driver's license may be required. Knowledge Of: Surgical and histological techniques Animal biology Animal disease recognition Drugs and medications Chemical solutions and formulas Federal and State policies and regulations concerning animal care Skill In: Operate equipment involved with animal surgery Perform animal surgery Interpersonal communication to effectively interact with University personnel and public in person and over the telephone (e.g., to exchange information with technical staff about testing procedures) Written communication (e.g., to complete forms, to compose memos) Operation of restraint devices Ability To: Demonstrate physical dexterity and lift 75 pounds Understand manual. Perform basic mathematics (e.g., add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, and to Calculate percentages) Train and provide effective work direction to other employees Manage time effectively, and set priorities, if required by position Operate a computer Preferred Qualifications – if applicable: Laboratory Animal Technician or Laboratory Animal Technologist (AALAS) certification or Registered Veterinary Technician is preferred. Assessments: Asterisk () indicates knowledge, skills, abilities which require assessments Working Conditions / Physical Requirements: Animal lab environment; exposed to animal odors, potential animal bites and diseases, wastes, surgical instruments, blood, etc.; requires moderate physical effort to include lifting up to 50 pounds (e.g., animals, cages), occasional lifting up to 75 pounds (e.g., bags of feed), bending, and extended periods of walking and standing; may work varied hours to include weekends and holidays.
