As a Ward Matron effective communication, working relationships and sharing information is paramount. The post holder will be required to: Maintain an effective communication network within, across the directorates, and outside of the organisation, promoting new ideas and initiatives. Work closely with the Advance practitioners as this is a Nurse Led Department o maintain effective communication with patients and their relatives/carers. To ensure communication which encompasses the patients individuals needs and preferences. To provide a visible, accessible and authoritative presence in the ward/department to whom patients and their families can turn for assistance, advice and support Pursue concerns raised by patients and their families and ensure these are resolved efficiently and effectively. To communicate effectively with all members of the Multi agency team in order to promote positive working relationships within the department, the directorate the Trust and any outside agencies. To ensure that relationships with patients, families and colleagues will remain professional at all times and to secure and assure the highest standards of clinical care by providing leadership to the professional and direct care staff within the group of wards/departments for which the post holder is accountable. Be responsible for Roster management and production within required roster lead times. Deploy nursing staff over a 24-hour period to meet the needs of the area including the management of recruitment and retention of all staffing in the area. Provide leadership and direction to the nursing team to assure that staff fulfil their roles effectively. Take responsibility for participation in appraisal, professional development planning and clinical supervision to support growth and development, ensuring business goals are clearly communicated and linked to objectives. Will support patients to be partners in their own health care through education, discussion and explanation of care Will be able to advice on the promotion of health and the prevention of illness. Support patients to adopt health promotion strategies that promote healthy lifestyles, and apply principles of self-care Be part of the team which provides patient centred, specialist clinical expertise, leadership and advice including the provision of direct clinical nursing care to patients within the service To actively engage in all aspects of patient safety and risk management Participate in regular clinical and professional supervision within regional and national forums to address any professional concerns and escalate as appropriate within the Trust Ensure appropriate supervision of new staff, student nurses and other visitors to the clinical team Maintain effective communication with the multi-disciplinary team and assist in maintaining across the care groups. Tackle discrimination and harassment, and promote equality and diversity in the workplace Provide leadership and direction to the nursing team to assure that staff fulfil their roles effectively. Take responsibility for participation in appraisal, professional development planning and clinical supervision to support growth and development, in conjunction with the Deputy Ward Matron, to review the training and development of all staff ensuring personal development plans are in place. To support staff in reaching their full potential as identified through the appraisal process Be aware of the Trust Policy relating to Risk Management Strategy and understand its implications within the area of work. Assist the Senior Matron in the investigation and resolution of nursing related complaints and incidents. Take a lead role in the investigation of disciplinary/untoward incidents occurring within the agreed sphere of responsibility. Regular attendance at clinical/non clinical meetings relevant to clinical area/role
