Our IT Services business area provides technology for the services National Records of Scotland (NRS) delivers to our customers, including Architecture & Business Analysis, Project and Programme Delivery, Service Management, Cyber Security, Infrastructure Engineering & Support, Data Engineering & Support, and Digital Engineering & Support. Working as part of our Digital Engineering Team, you will work collaboratively across NRS teams - and with digital delivery partners - on the development, testing, delivery, and ongoing support and maintenance of IT digital services. At this role level, you will: • develop software to meet user needs • follow best practice guidelines and help to improve those guidelines • write clean, secure and well-tested code • coach and mentor more junior colleagues • operate the services you build and identify issues in production Responsibilities In this role you will contribute to the design, development, testing and overall delivery of services through carrying out the majority of the below duties/responsibilities: Availability and capacity management Managing service components to ensure they meet business needs and performance targets. Software engineering (Programming and build) Collaborating with others when necessary to review specifications. Using agreed specifications to design, code, test and document programs or scripts of medium-to-high complexity, using the right standards and tools. Having an awareness of cloud technologies and their use within the development of modern applications and services User focus Collaborating with user researchers and representing users internally, you champion user research to focus on all users. Prioritising and defining approaches to understand the user story, guiding others in doing so. Offering recommendations on the best tools and methods to use. Development process optimisation Supporting specific activities to improve and identifying obvious deficiencies in development processes. Information security Participating in the information security process. Designing and implementing embedded security controls in solutions and services. Prototyping Participating in team prototyping, advocating for the use of prototyping, and testing with others. Establishing and iterating design patterns. Using a variety of prototyping methods and choosing the most appropriate. Systems design and systems integration Designing systems characterised by managed levels of risk, manageable business and technical complexity, and meaningful impact. Producing detailed designs and working well with understood technology and identify appropriate patterns. Building and test simple interfaces between systems. Service support Helping to fix faults following agreed procedures. Carrying out agreed planned maintenance activities on infrastructure / middleware. Your experience developing and supporting Java-based systems allows you to help identify and fix faults following agreed procedures and carry out agreed maintenance tasks. Your experience participating in team development processes means you can identify process deficiencies and support specific activities to improve them. Your experience of the technologies and patterns used by Java enables you to produce detailed designs of components and data structures (if required) using well understood technology, appropriate patterns, and security controls embedded. Your experience developing complex Java-based web applications enables you to take ownership of the end-to-end process of delivering a feature with an agreed implementation. Your collaboration with product, data and/or architecture teams enables you to understand and refine the user needs in a story. Candidates who pass the initial sift will have their applications fully assessed against the other Experience criteria and Behaviours. Stage two (interview and DDaT technical assessment): If successful at application sift, you will be invited to an assessment and interview where we will test all criteria outlined in the Success Profile above. Candidates selected for interview will be invited to undertake a practical coding exercise, which they will be asked to summarise and demonstrate as part of a presentation, in order to test the required technical skills. Details of the exercise and presentation will be shared in advance of the interview. Candidates will also be asked a series of questions to test their behaviours and experience.
