We are looking for an experienced leader to manage new teams whose central purpose is to continuously improve all aspects of water company regulation. The team will face an individual water company and work alongside a network of colleagues in national and local teams.
You will have a good understanding of the water industry, its assets and how it impacts the environment gained through substantial relevant experience typically in an operational or regulatory role. You will provide direction and ensure the effective operational delivery and assurance of that regulation, for an industry with nationally and politically significant sites.
Accountable for leading and managing a department of regulatory teams, each led by regulatory team leader and made up of officers with a wide range of skills, including a Principal Regulatory Officer. You will lead your teams in deploying our resources to achieve the greatest environmental outcomes and lead on the development of the overall regulatory strategy for the water company, advising the Deputy Director. You will need to demonstrate your ability to lead and coach the new teams through cultural and business change while maintaining their health, safety, and wellbeing, supporting them to develop and managing ways of working to ensure we meet the needs of the future.
As a Regulatory Manager you will have an externally facing role and be required to establish and maintain relationships. This will require a detailed understanding of our partners and customers, needed to address events/situations that threaten serious damage to the environment, and of the relevant water company at strategic leadership level.
The team
You’ll join the newly formed team reporting to the Deputy Director. As part of the leadership team, you will provide forward thinking and strategic direction and work with others across the wider business to influence and shape thinking in an agile way to deliver regulation in Local operations.
We’re a friendly, dispersed team. We use smart tools to stay connected and reduce travel, but some travel and overnight stays may be required.
Experience/skills Required
We are looking for candidates with either a degree in an environmental discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
You will have a strong strategic mindset, with the ability to align water company initiatives with environmental objectives, anticipate trends, and identify opportunities for intelligence driven regulation to maximise environmental improvement. Along with:
* an excellent ability to lead and influence across the business with a strong customer focus
* ability to provide high level advice, guidance and judgement relating to the regulatory activities of your team
* sound knowledge of the environmental pressures impacting the water industry and the environment
* effective communication and negotiation skills in dealing with business colleagues at all grades
* ability to build respectful working relationships with emotional intelligence
* a positive can-do attitude

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you.
You will be based in either our Penrith, Preston or Warrington office with hybrid flexible working patterns to suit business needs. Occasional travel will be required for face to face team meetings, away days, work related events etc.
