An exciting opportunity to join the rehabilitation inpatient team on Ocean View has arisen for band 3 healthcare support workers/nursing assistants, to join an established team of nurses, occupational therapists, and a full multi-disciplinary team. Ocean View is well equipped and has a lovely garden and outside therapy area, a gym, art room, and bespoke kitchen, purpose-built to maximize patients' recovery.
Ocean View is an 8-bedded ward for the rehabilitation of patients with severe mental illness, primarily complex psychosis, and is located at North Devon District Hospital, Barnstaple. The role of the band 3 covers assisting the registered nurses in the safe day-to-day running of the ward. This includes physical health care and promotion, assisting with Acts of Daily Living, providing patient escorts, helping them engage with physical activities, participating in groups, and completing full and accurate documentation. The role also requires facilitating activities such as home visits or escorting patients to social and recreational activities within the local community.
The focus of the service will be to support recovery, provide hope, and rehabilitation by delivering the intensive inpatient component of the care pathway to people with complex severe mental illness. The band 3 nursing assistant is an integral part of the team and plays a vital role in helping patients achieve their full potential and progress towards a successful discharge. A day for a band 3 nursing assistant may include the following: safety checks on the ward and on the patients themselves, helping patients to get up in good time to participate in ADLs - washing, dressing, maintaining personal hygiene, eating healthily, and participation in groups, such as budgeting, relaxation, and yoga. This may also involve escorting patients off the ward for physical activities, home visits, shopping, or recreational activities. The band 3 nursing assistant may help or prompt the patient to prepare their own lunch, ensuring food safety standards are maintained. The role includes working alongside other professionals, such as occupational therapists and the ward psychiatrist. The role is fulfilling, for example, helping patients to grow their own food and maintain a lovely garden, and is at times challenging, such as responding to emergency alarms and engaging in the safe and effective management of violence and aggression across the unit. We expect the successful applicant to be flexible, resourceful, caring, and responsive, and in turn, they will be given the training and support to become confident and competent in the role.
