About the Role:
This is a hybrid role requiring on-site presence at our Capenhurst site (CH1 6ES) 3 days per week.
As a Senior Consultant, you’ll be at the forefront of leading projects related to the condition assessments and failure analysis of power systems plants. In particular, Power Transformers and Instrument Transformers (CTs / VTs) as your work will play a critical role in helping clients maintain reliable and resilient power networks.
You’ll also have the unique opportunity to work within a team of experts, from a wide range of technical disciplines who lead forensic investigations in a wide range of power systems plant, including bushings, cables, switchgear, surge arrestors and overhead line systems.
As the Senior Consultant, you will have a hands-on practical approach to the projects, being able to strip down the power systems plant you are involved in working alongside the technical engineering staff. From project planning and evidence collection to reporting and project closure, you’ll be involved in every stage of the process.
The role will also involve liaising and building relationships with key customers and stakeholders in the industry.
Key Responsibilities:
The failure investigations and condition assessments of oil filled and cast resin power and instrument transformers, typically include the following activities:
1. High voltage and high current electrical testing of transformer and instrument transformers, working with external laboratories and organisations.
2. Benchtop electrical testing of the transformers to ascertain the condition of the windings, including winding resistance measurements and winding ratio analysis.
3. In the case of oil filled transformers, (via the oil lab) analysing data related to the health of the oil and paper insulation.
4. Detanking of the transformer and strip down of the component parts.
5. Identification of signs of ageing, defects and breakdown paths within the insulation systems.
Other responsibilities will include:
1. Working with expert knowledge groups, including Universities, Cigre, IEEE and IEC / BS standards organisations.
2. Providing technical advice and knowledge to assist other team members with technical aspects of investigation projects.
3. Drive continuous improvements across the Power Forensics proposition set through opportunity identification, sharing best practice and learning.
4. Aspects of the day to day running of the projects hall and materials lab.
What We’ll Need from You:
1. B.Eng (or higher) in Electrical Engineering.
2. Working towards or already hold professional registration with a relevant institution.
3. Ideally to have worked for a transformer OEM, an electrical utility organisation, a consultancy or a power plant service provider.
4. Comprehensive technical understanding of power systems plant and their operation.
5. An understanding of the magnetic and electrical field distributions in transformers and methods used to control electrical field distributions.
6. An understanding of partial discharge and techniques, such as DGA analysis and its significance in the ageing and failure of transformers.
7. Ability to differentiate between failure observations and root causes during investigations.
