Firstsite is a contemporary art gallery in Colchester, Essex, housed in an award-winning building designed by Rafael Vinoly. Established in 1993, it is the largest public gallery in the East of England.
All the relevant skills, qualifications and experience that a successful applicant will need are listed in the following description.
They are not your typical gallery. They are a radical, ambitious, and deeply connected organisation, working at the intersection of art, culture, and social change. Their work is underpinned by a belief that creativity has the power to transform lives, challenge perspectives, and shape a better future. Their work extends far beyond exhibitions – bringing people together, celebrating unheard voices, and tackling real-world challenges with energy, imagination, and care.
They are seeking a COO who thrives on bold thinking, embraces innovation, and is ready to take risks. You will be joining at a pivotal moment as they push boundaries in the cultural sector, grow their impact, build a sustainable future for the organisation, and the communities they enable and support. This is a role for a qualified accountant who is excited by the dynamism of a fast-moving organisation, who is unafraid to challenge the status quo, and who brings both strategic vision and hands-on problem-solving skills.
Firstsite’s work is underpinned by their Strategic Priorities (2024-2027):
1. Creative – Expand access to our artistic programme, ensuring greater representation of underrepresented voices. Within three years, our leadership, team, and content will reflect national demographics.
2. Social – Increase engagement in art and creativity by 10% annually, reaching 150,000 people by 2026/27, with a focus on global majorities, D/deaf and disabled people, LGBTQI+ communities, and local working populations.
3. Economic – Strengthen financial sustainability through philanthropy, sponsorship, and membership, targeting a 19% income increase over three years.
4. Sustainability – Transition to 100% LED lighting and explore solar energy, aiming for self-sufficiency in electricity by 2030.
5. Research & Innovation – Measure and promote the impact of creativity on health, economic regeneration, and social cohesion, supporting Colchester’s post-COVID recovery.
As an organisation that values community and flexibility, they are seeking a COO to engage with and support the CEO, Sally Shaw, as the organisation enters the next stage of its evolution.
Firstsite is committed to breaking barriers to access, employment, and leadership in the arts, and actively encourage applications from all, including marginalised groups.
