Job ID: 2942080 | Amazon Data Services, Inc.
Do you like to use network and Unix systems engineering to deliver simple, sustainable and repeatable solutions? Would you like to play a key role in driving the stability and sustainability of next-generation IP networks?
AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help.
You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
The Enterprise Network provides mission-critical global connectivity for internal services and business applications, datacenter infrastructure equipment, and 1,000,000+ internal users. In this role you will look for innovative and creative ways to automate and scale our next-generation network architectures.
We are seeking an experienced Network Development Engineer to join a highly skilled team that designs and automates the growth of next generation networking products deployed to AWS Datacenters globally.
Key job responsibilities
Network Development Engineers perform high quality network and/or systems operations, deployments, scaling, technology refresh, sustaining engineering, best practices application, optimization, internal/external customer interactions, and produce appropriate technical documentation.
1. Create and implement changes on the network.
2. Work closely with our automation teams in defining the tools that allow us to scale at higher volume.
3. Lead network projects in the areas of network sustaining engineering, network deployment/implementation, network scaling, technology refresh, best practices application, and/or network optimization.
4. Sustain Amazon Web Services’ next generation networks for significant AWS customers by providing critical network support to diagnose, mitigate impact, and resolve large-scale networking events.
5. Operate and troubleshoot network routing, interconnectivity, platforms, performance, and configurations issues; including necessary low level application interaction, Unix systems, and new age networking software tools.
6. Drive and support innovation from Top of Rack to the Network Border and everything in between.
7. Partner with our broader Network/Infrastructure organization in the areas of network engineering, configurations standards, and tools.
8. Work closely with our Network/Systems/Software Engineering teams to ensure fast, smooth roll-out of new designs and products, as well as assist with deployment and sustaining of networking software tools.
9. Maintain standards across the networking toolset and ensure that we are fully compliant to those standards and policies.
10. Deliver simple, sustainable and repeatable solutions and processes.
11. Collaborate with highest tier escalation engineers/resolvers.
12. Create and review documentation and process regarding network implementation/deployments, recurring issues, new standard operating procedures, knowledge transfer material, etc.
A day in the life
Engineers in the Backbone, Enterprise, and Regional Engineering (BERE) organization have a wide range of responsibilities: we work with internal partners to develop and implement the next gen platforms along with the tooling ecosystems to support with these platforms driving efficiency and scalability through the automation of builds, configuration deployment, and the scaling of capacity. As our network is one of the largest in the world, there is no blueprint at our scale allowing our engineers to develop solutions to the complex challenges that we face daily. We encourage durable solutions that look around corners while taking into consideration our customer needs from a cost, performance, and reliability perspective. Our team develops tooling that provides the required visibility and control of traffic across the network, while prioritizing the automatic mitigation of events to minimize the impact to our customers during events.
1. Work in a 24x7 team on call rotation, with ability to drive into workplace for critical events/needs.
2. Manage customers during problem resolution and operating efficiently under pressure.
3. Sit at the computer during scheduled work hours with appropriate breaks while maintaining a high level of alertness and attention to detail.
4. Travel to data center/network sites and Amazon/customer offices as needed.
About the team
Within AWS Networking, the Backbone, Enterprise, and Regional Engineering (BERE) organization is responsible for the design, implementation, and operations of a wide array of networking infrastructure that provide global connectivity between all AWS Regions and edge locations. BERE provides the massive scale required to support our AWS customers and internal services, via a network that grows by 70% annually. In addition, they have teams that are responsible for the design and operation of our global corporate office and data center network, allowing tens of thousands of Amazonians to perform their daily tasks in support of our customers.
