The Vacancy
The MTC Operations team are looking for a skilled Advanced Research Engineer to join their team in either Liverpool and/or Coventry. The Advanced Research Engineer (ARE) – Informatics role is focused on the technical delivery of projects and supporting development of project related activities in the domain of data engineering (data management tools and dashboarding).
Main Responsibilities:
* Technical delivery of data engineering projects, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* Support customer and internal partner liaison activities.
* Support horizon scanning of technologies and new approaches to solve industrial problems across a range of industrial sectors.
* Generation of new project ideas in alignment with the department's strategy.
* Own career development through mentoring coaching and training courses.
Person Specification
Essential Skills/Qualifications/Experience
* Degree-calibre engineer, technologist, computer scientist or mathematician.
* Good knowledge of data management platforms (e.g., Microsoft Azure) for data acquisition, storage, processing, and analysis.
* Ability to design and evaluate architectures for standard data problems.
* Ability to create and administrate Azure services.
* Development of flows for data manipulation, either via coding or use of low-code platforms like Synapse.
* Good knowledge of visualisation and dashboarding tools (e.g. PowerBI, Grafana, Plotly) for plotting data sets, monitoring, and reporting.
* Good knowledge of Python is necessary, with experience in another programming languages (e.g. Javascript, Java, Rust, C/C++) beneficial.
* Knowledge of the manufacturing sector and understanding of manufacturing systems and technologies.
* Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills are required for the role; able to demonstrate very good technical report writing and presentation skills, maintaining appropriate level of detail, linking detailed activities back to project objectives and business vision.
Desirable Skills/Qualifications/Experience
* At least 3 years' recent and substantial work experience on relevant manufacturing systems in industrial manufacturing or R&D environments.
* Good understanding of some of the following domains: Artificial Intelligence, Industrial Connectivity, OT Cyber Security, XR systems, Industrial Vision Systems and/or Manufacturing ICT Systems.
* Demonstrable experience with Systems Engineering methodologies, system modelling tools and performing customer requirements analysis from OT and IT perspectives.
