As a Senior Underwriter, you will be responsible for managing a team of Underwriters and Assistant Underwriters and overseeing the renewal underwriting process. Your expertise in evaluating risk, analyzing policy renewals, and maintaining broker relationships will be crucial.
Your strong leadership and people management skills will be essential in guiding and developing a high-performing team.
The role will include a product suite consisting of commercial combined, property owners, retail package, primary liability, excess liability, contract works, and contractors’ plant and equipment.
Responsibilities
* Renew approximately 75 renewals per month (Commercial Combined, Property Owners, Retail Package, General Liability, Contractors Liability).
* Lead and manage a team of Underwriters and Assistant Underwriters, providing guidance, coaching, and support to ensure professional growth and success.
* Maintain premium income per binder in line with projections and company strategy.
* Develop broker relationships to become a key referral point for brokers.
* Identify renewal threats and assist handlers on renewal strategy.
* Ensure compliance with best practice procedures (processes and timescales).
* Review and update renewal template letters to brokers (invitations and document issuing).
* Filter referrals to insurers.
* Act as a technical referral point for the renewals team.
* Set performance goals, conduct performance appraisals, and provide constructive feedback to enhance individual and team performance.
* Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture, promoting effective communication, knowledge sharing, and teamwork.
* Oversee induction and peer review for new starters.
* Conduct one-to-one monthly peer reviews with each renewal handler.
* Develop and maintain relationships with your broker panel.
* Monthly reporting.
* Perform to the highest standards and in accordance with the Conduct Rules as specified by the FCA.

Experience & Knowledge
* Commercial underwriting experience is essential, specifically in Property and Liability.
* Exceptional leadership and people management skills, with a demonstrated ability to motivate and develop high performing teams.
* Previous experience in setting clear goals and objectives, monitoring progress, and providing regular feedback and coaching.
* Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate complex risks and make informed decisions.
* Experience in dealing with Commercial brokers/Insurers.
* Experience working in a small team in SME organisations.
* Experience in underwriting with delegated authority or underwriting licenses.
* Proven track record of developing new and existing relationships with key brokers.
* Ability to deliver on financial targets.
* Ability to work in a team and on your own initiative.
* Experience in using software systems for underwriting and administration.
