The role
As a Recovery Nurse, you’ll be responsible for the care and monitoring of patients immediately following surgery or a medical procedure involving anaesthesia. Your duties involve ensuring patients safely emerge from anaesthesia, managing pain, and monitoring vital signs. You’ll assess patients' consciousness, airway, and overall condition as they wake up from anaesthesia, providing necessary interventions to maintain stability. You’ll also manage postoperative pain, administer medications, and address any immediate complications or discomfort.
Close communication with the surgical team and anesthesiologists is a crucial part of this role to ensure a smooth transition from the operating room to the recovery area, so excellent communication skills are essential. You’ll also need to be confident making judgement calls in emergency situations, and provide a comforting, friendly approach to patients whilst they recover from the effects of anaesthesia.
