Civils Engineering Manager / Lead Project Engineer is required to work within the Client Organisation responsible for the multi-billion-pound High-Speed Rail project in the UK based from Birmingham – working on a Multi-Billion Main works civils contract which has 5 years left on the programme. Working for the client organisation HS2 reporting to the Head of Engineering for the project you will be working on the largest single contract on HS2 – the BBV (Balfour Beatty, Vinci plc) Main Works Civils Area North, £6bn - 90km line of route consists of 42 Viaducts, 66 bridges, 35 cuttings, 56 culverts, 66 embankments & 4 motor crossings. Reporting to the Head of Engineering on the project, the Lead Project Engineer is responsible to execute legal and contractual technical duties on project engineering issues within the Integrated Project Team (IPT), leading risk-based assurance of asset design and construction, assuring that it is in accordance with HS2’s technical requirements, standards and policies including CDM, in a timely and cost-efficient manner. High Speed 2 are looking for an experienced delivery focused Engineering Manager, Senior / Lead Project Engineer, Design Manager with major infrastructure experience. You’ll be a qualified Civil Engineer ideally chartered with major project experience – highways, bridges, stations, tunnels, ,major infrastructure. The contract is in construction (Delivery) phase and will involve ensuring and assuring the design & construction meets the requirements, quality, CDM, solving technical problems, through to commissioning & handover. Commercial acumen is also required managing the change on the project (NEC3), The Civil Engineering Main Works contract has 5 years left (50% completed) of which 1 year left of detailed design and then delivery of the assets into handover. After which you can move to Stations or one of the 14 Rail System contracts – 10 years left on programme. Huge opportunities for future progression and development. Key challenges include: Managing such a huge programme with 280 assets (where 1 asset could be 2 mile viaduct), this is relentlessly challenging project with consents to agree, interfaces to manage (network rail / National highways) - Managing time pressure is a key task -on such a major project & challenging programme there is always a blockage or major works planned that need your input to go ahead, effectively managing this is crucial. Working Relationship – Co-located & Hybrid The client team are working alongside the main contractor (Co-located) in the same Birmingham site offices as well as some work in the main HS2 Birmingham Snowhill office, Role is site office based from HS2 Birmingham Snowhill offices and Fort Dunlop BBV main site site offices coupled with Hybrid working – expectation is to work 2 days a week from the office and the rest of the time at home. Senior Project Engineer, £75 – 81,780 Pen (6:12) health 25 Hol (potentially £85,869) Duties and responsibilities To lead the risk based engineering technical assurance within the IPT, as per the HS2 assurance requirements, through engineering review, checking and submission of assurance evidence for technical stage gates; To assure that the design and construction of assets comply with the technical and sponsor requirements and applicable standards, specifications and procedures by supporting planned Technical Assurance Reviews and “spot-checks” of Contractor’s deliverables; To discharge the duties of NEC3 Supervisor and Principal Designer (CDM Regulations 2015) Representative as directed by Head of Engineering and Environment. To support Head of Engineering and Environment with internal and external reporting and risk identification and mitigation of engineering matters; To represent the Head of Engineering and Environment as requested in matters relating to CDM Principal Designer, NEC3 Supervisor or any other technical duty. Manage and communicate HS2 Engineering requirements to the IPT contractor; Provide guidance on design solutions for the asset, promoting use of best practice and innovative engineering techniques, technologies and processes, driving consistency and identifying opportunities for efficiencies within the IPT Work alongside Heads of Commercial and Project Clients to determine the impact of trends, progress and change with respect to cost and schedule. Work alongside other technical specialists, engineers and environmentalists to identify and develop appropriate and cost balanced mitigation strategies and solutions, contributing to successful system integration between station, railway systems and other delivery contracts To assure the technical coordination and integration of the supply contracts with other neighboring contracts, station contracts, railway systems contracts and others. To be the discipline engineer in technical areas for which they have the recognised technical competence. Candidate Criteria Looking for a Delivery Focused Engineering Manager, Senior / Lead Project Engineer, Design Manager with major civil engineering infrastructure experience. Will have worked on major civil project such as – Highways, Rail, Crossrail, Airports, East West Rail, New Nuclear, Thames tideway – large scale civil engineering infrastructure projects The contract is in construction (Delivery) phase and will involve ensuring and assuring the detailed design & construction meets the requirements, quality, CDM, solving technical problems, through to commissioning & handover. Commercial acumen is also required managing the change on the project (NEC3). Must have strong stakeholder engagement skills ability to work in a collaborative co-located project team whilst navigating a complex matrix environment. Open to client, consultancy or Main Contractor background – client more preferable but a mix would be ideal & would have worked for an organisation who was the Principal Designer (CDM)
