Main duties of the job
* To perform a range of the following procedures in accordance with established policies and professional codes of practice ensuring high standards and optimal results:
o Supporting team in diagnostic angiography lab
o Supporting team in PPM implant and follow up
o 12 lead ECG interpretation
o Exercise tolerance testing
o Responsible for leading the test ensuring test appropriateness and safety.
o Ambulatory ECG monitoring
o Ambulatory BP monitoring
o Ambulatory ECG analysis
o 24 hour and cardiac event recorders

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
* Under supervision, until proficient, provide technical cover in the cardiac catheter laboratories (during RHC and LHC) and during pacemaker insertion
* Under supervision, until proficient, perform Tilt Tests within the Cardiac Investigations Department
* Under supervision, perform pacemaker and ICD checks for both inpatient and outpatients. With guidance write reports for the Cardiologists and in cases where a serious condition is diagnosed, seek urgent verification from a chief technician(s) and/or inform a cardiologist on duty
* To hold a current ILS certificate, leading/participating in arrests where required. Provide support for all members of the multi-disciplinary team, including debriefing, with subsequent preparation of the patient for a safe transfer to an appropriate recovery environment if required
* To be responsible for the management of your caseload. This will involve the assessment, prioritisation and planning of appropriate examinations, ensuring the provision of effective and sensitive evidence-based care to the highest standards
* Allocates tasks to student/trainees when appropriate
* Using in-depth, detailed analysis and interpretation of a range of clinical and technical data, the post holder will provide a factual report for specialised studies performed personally (and where necessary by others within the Trust and in the PCT setting) which will be monitored by senior staff
* Maintain clear, concise and contemporaneous records
* Attend study days and courses as required, to maintain, improve and develop specialist skills
* Comply with the relevant Codes of Professional Conduct and Scope of Professional Practice
* Employ the safe and appropriate use of sensitive, specialist medical equipment
* To be involved in writing, evaluating and auditing of guidelines, protocols and local policies
* To ensure all equipment is stored, cleaned and operated safely according to Trust and Local policies and to train junior staff to do the same
* To demonstrate a commitment to research based practice and clinical excellence
* To contribute to a climate where staff members appropriately question and challenge practice, and where decision-making can be openly discussed
* To be flexible/willing to assist all areas within cardiac physiology e.g. at times of sickness or increased workload.
Person specification
Education and Qualifications
* BSc (Hons) in Clinical Physiology or equivalent (e.g. HNC in Medical Physics and Physiological Measurement)
* Registered or working towards registration with RCCP/HCPC
Experience
* Working towards becoming proficient in solely performing echocardiograms and reporting on the scan findings
* Proficient in specialist non-invasive clinical technical cardiac investigations
* Working towards becoming proficient in invasive cardiology including cardiac catheterisation and pacing
* Basic IT skills
Knowledge
* Ability to work competently and perform, report and supervise Physiologist led Exercise ECG treadmill tests, Ambulatory and resting ECG’s
* Hold a current ILS certificate
* Good degree of knowledge/clinical acumen in related medical fields
* Evidence of continuing professional development across a range of specialist clinical techniques and fields
Key Skills
* Ability to frequently perform at a high level of concentration
* Sound interpersonal, organisational and communication skills
* Able to work under pressure in complex and emergency situations
* Good previous attendance record
