Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
The purpose of this role is to coordinate and lead the Trust's patient safety and risk agenda under the direction of the Deputy Chief Nursing Officer (Director of Quality and Safety).
The post holder will also ensure that relevant patient safety, risk management and improvement initiatives are undertaken to enhance patient safety. The post holder will manage the Patient Safety team, providing operational support to the divisions in delivering the quality agenda.
As a Patient Safety Specialist, you will be supported to develop into an expert advisor on patient safety and risk management, ensuring compliance with legislative requirements and national and local policy, responsible for ensuring that the patient safety agenda and risk management is embedded throughout the organisation by providing support, advice and guidance on all aspects of risk and patient safety.

Essential Criteria
* Post-graduate management, leadership or specialist qualification or previous experience
* Educated to master's level in risk, safety or equivalent level, or equivalent experience of working at a senior level
Desirable Criteria
* Clinical professional qualification
* PSIRF training / Systems training
* Human Factors training
* Quality improvement qualification or previous experience
Experience
Essential Criteria
* Extensive experience of leading a patient safety and risk management team within the NHS.
* Experience of working in a patient safety-related role with an understanding of the principles that underpin approaches to improving patient safety in health systems
* Experience of leading incident investigations
* Previous experience in developing and implementing organisation wide projects.
* Experience in developing Trust wide policies.
* Demonstrable evidence of initiating change and implementing evidence-based practice.
* Management of a Risk Management system such as Datix.
* Experience of working collaboratively with patients/service/stakeholders to improve quality of service by co-design
* Experience and knowledge of the components of clinical governance, incident response, risk management and assurance function; current NHS national policies, standards, requirements, and directions that relate to measuring and improving the quality and safety of patient care
* Knowledge of the NHS patient safety strategy and how it can be implemented
* Knowledge of systems thinking, human factors understanding and just culture principles
Desirable Criteria
* A good understanding of the strategic issues currently shaping the NHS.
* Knowledge and experience of developments in quality improvement science
* Previous experience in developing and implementing a risk management strategy.
* Experience in project/change management in a healthcare environment and driving improvement for the safety of patients which can include techniques and tools such as Agile, Prince 2 or Managing Successful Projects
* Knowledge of safeguarding and the legal duties expected of NHS organisations
