Job Description:
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Teaching Assistant to support a Year 4 child with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and challenging behaviour within a mainstream primary school. The child will be part of our nurture provision which provides a supportive, structured environment tailored to students' social and emotional needs. The ideal candidate will have experience working with children who face SEMH challenges and be passionate about supporting them to thrive in a mainstream classroom setting.
Key Responsibilities:
* Individual Student Support:
o Provide one-to-one support for a Year 4 child with SEMH and challenging behaviour, helping them access the curriculum and participate fully in class activities.
o Implement tailored strategies to support the child’s emotional regulation, behaviour management, and academic progress.
o Monitor and record the child’s behaviour, emotional development, and academic progress, providing regular feedback to the class teacher and SENCO.
o Assist in the creation and implementation of individual learning plans (ILPs) or Behaviour Support Plans (BSPs), with a focus on supporting emotional well-being and reducing challenging behaviour.
* Behaviour Management:
o Support the child in managing challenging behaviour using positive reinforcement techniques and de-escalation strategies.
o Use nurturing approaches to help the child feel safe, supported, and valued in the classroom, promoting self-esteem and self-regulation.
o Provide appropriate interventions to support the child in developing social skills, self-control, and the ability to interact positively with peers and adults.
* Nurture Provision Support:
o Work closely with the nurture provision team to provide a calm, structured, and supportive environment tailored to the child's needs.
o Help facilitate small group activities aimed at developing emotional and social skills, such as circle time, social stories, or role-playing exercises.
o Support the child’s transition between the nurture provision and the main classroom, ensuring they feel confident and ready to engage with their peers.
* Collaboration with Staff:
o Work collaboratively with the class teacher, SENCO, and other members of staff to ensure that the child’s needs are met effectively and consistently across the school day.
o Attend regular meetings to review the child’s progress, discuss any concerns, and update strategies or targets.
o Support the wider school community by promoting inclusion, encouraging positive interactions, and ensuring that the child feels part of the school.
* Communication with Parents and Carers:
o Build positive relationships with the child’s family, offering support and guidance on strategies to use at home to complement the school’s approach.
o Provide feedback to parents/carers on the child’s progress, behaviour, and emotional well-being, maintaining open communication regarding any concerns or successes.
* General Classroom Assistance:
o Assist the teacher with general classroom tasks, including preparing resources, supporting other students as needed, and maintaining a positive learning environment.
o Help supervise the child during break times, lunch, and other activities to ensure they feel supported and engaged.
Key Requirements:
* Experience:
o Previous experience working with children, particularly those with SEMH or challenging behaviour, is essential.
o Experience in a primary school setting, ideally within a nurture provision or supporting children with special educational needs (SEN).
o A good understanding of behaviour management techniques and emotional well-being strategies.
* Skills:
o Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with children, staff, and parents.
o Patience, empathy, and resilience, with a calm and nurturing approach to behaviour management.
o Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to liaise effectively with teachers, parents, and external agencies.
o Ability to work independently and as part of a team, adapting to the needs of the child and school environment.
* Qualifications:
o A Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification (or equivalent) is desirable but not essential.
o Any relevant training in SEMH, behaviour management, or first aid would be an advantage.
Desirable Attributes:

o Experience or training in Restorative Practices, Therapeutic Crisis Intervention, or TEAM TEACH would be beneficial.
o Knowledge of attachment theory and how it relates to SEMH.
* Flexibility and Adaptability:
o Ability to adapt to the changing needs of a child with SEMH, maintaining a flexible and patient approach.
Benefits:
* Competitive salary based on experience and qualifications.
* Access to professional development opportunities, including training in SEMH and behaviour management strategies.
