Apprentice Wheelchair Therapy Assistant (XR02)
We are recruiting motivated, caring and compassionate individuals for the role of Apprentice Wheelchair Therapy Assistant for our Adult Therapies area. This full-time (37.5 hours per week) apprenticeship is undertaken within a fifteen month fixed-term contract, and provides an ideal opportunity to begin your healthcare career at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. You will be required to work Monday to Friday and have regular study days.
Main duties of the job
As an Apprentice Wheelchair Therapy Assistant at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, you’ll learn how to assess for the provision of mobility devices under the supervision of a Wheelchair Therapist, including personal care tasks, unpacking and assembling of devices, mobility and transfer tasks. Over the 15-month programme, you’ll learn how to take into account a patients individual physical, social and emotional needs to give a holistic assessment and will become a valued part of the therapy team.
Spending most of your time at the base at Seacroft Hospital doing telephone assessments, you’ll work with the multidisciplinary team and assist with clinics and home visits in the acute and community setting. It’s about giving you experience to equip you for whatever comes your way. There will also be coursework and practical assessments so you can demonstrate your learning.

Job responsibilities
To work within the Wheelchair Therapy team providing clinical, administrative and organisational support to the Wheelchair Therapists. All clinical responsibilities will be delegated by the Wheelchair Therapist and involve on-going intervention following protocols and guidelines.
This post is based at Seacroft Hospital working within the Specialist Rehabilitation Services department and in the community. Alongside Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Rehabilitation Engineers.
The post involves both Face to Face and Non Face to Face assessments for and provision of mobility devices under the supervision of a Wheelchair Therapist, including personal care tasks, unpacking and assembling of devices, mobility and transfer tasks.
Person Specification
Basic Educational Standard - Literate and numerate (to have the ability to obtain a Pass in Level 1 Functional skills in Literacy and Numeracy). Willing to undertake any necessary training as required, see education and training section below. Awareness of working in a Health or Social Care setting demonstrate an understanding of Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy.
