At Swindon Borough Council, we want our town to be the best it can be. Our ambitious vision in the new Swindon Plan is supported by realistic transformation programmes, with the people of Swindon at their heart. Because that’s who we’re doing it for – the communities and businesses that make our town great. As part of the Council, you’ll support a friendly local authority making decisions with real impact. It’s all for better public services. Better processes. And a better quality of life, for everyone. Join us, and Swindon will be better with you.
We are looking for an experienced and driven Fleet Manager who can lead our well established service into the future. You will bring your experience of leading Fleet services either within the public or private sectors to this team who give their best every day for the residents of Swindon.
Your knowledge of fleet operation, workshop management, fleet procurement and Transport Commissioner legislation makes you our ideal candidate. So too is your commitment to continuous professional development and being a flagship service leader.
Your next role
2025 will be an important year for Fleet services in Swindon. As part of a newly formed service, you will be absolutely crucial to the successful delivery of our ambitions. Following the retirement of a longstanding Fleet Manager, you will inherit a well-run and high performing service. With a fleet of new waste and gritting vehicles recently purchased, together with a modern operational fleet, you will be the proud custodian of this major council investment and charged with ensuring it is used to maximum effect for our residents. You will act as the named Operator’s Licence holder for the council, leading on all aspects of vehicle maintenance and compliance; therefore, a Transport Manager’s CPC will be essential and an LGV Category C Licence will be beneficial.
You will be responsible for continuing the current high standard of work of the service and delivering the Fleet replacement strategy for the next 5 years. You will do this with the support of a professional and efficient team reporting to you and also an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and engaged peer group who will support you every step of the way.
You will be responsible for a team of staff based out of the council’s depot at Waterside Park, Swindon. You will use your experience and drive to ensure that our fleet service is run smoothly and efficiently with a focus on customer service, performance management and staff leadership.
You must be fluent in the English language (as a requirement of Part 7 of the Immigration Act “for the effective performance of a customer-facing role”).
As an employee, you will receive a diverse and exciting environment in which to work, encouraging creativity and innovation whilst recognising the need to support ongoing personal development and a flexible work life balance.
For Swindon to thrive in the future, we need to lay the foundations now. It’s why our regeneration and transformation programmes are already underway. So, you’ll be joining us at an exciting time on our journey. We’ll look to you to share your knowledge, influence decisions and drive real, positive change. With your contributions, we’ll achieve our vision of a prosperous, revitalised Swindon by 2030 together. And you’ll be proud to say it was made better with you.
Read the role profile and select the Apply button where you will be redirected to the Swindon Borough Council website to complete our online application process. Clicking the ‘Apply’ button on this job website is not an application; you must register on the Swindon Borough Council website in order to be considered for the role.
Potential applicants are sometimes put off if they don’t meet 100% of the requirements. We think individual experience, skills and passion make all the difference, so if you meet the majority of the criteria, we’d love to hear from you.
