Now is an exciting time to join Hull City Council. Within our Community Plan, we have just set out a new vision for the city, rooted in what residents have said about the improvements they would like to see, their hopes and aspirations for the future of Hull. Central to this is a commitment to becoming a Child Friendly City where the voices of children and young people are heard and respected, their unique talents are celebrated in school and they feel they belong.
Our vision for SEND was coproduced with our families after a series of listening events that followed the inspection of 2019:
“ We want all children and young people aged 0-25 with SEND to be healthy and happy, do well in education, make friends and build strong, lasting relationships within their local community. To develop independence, be safe, active and successful and have the confidence to achieve their aspirations".
All of the work undertaken by the local area’s SEND partnership aims to deliver this vision, which is broken down into strategic priorities, and the principle of coproduction is at the heart of all that we do to deliver it. Our next Head of SEND will ensure that parents and carers, our experts by experience, are respected as equal partners in an improvement journey which has gathered strong momentum in recent years.
The role will involve leading an integrated approach to the delivery of SEND services, working collaboratively with social care and health colleagues and wider inclusion services to ensure that children and young people with SEND are valued and supported in all settings. Close working with Hull’s Learning Partnership of school leaders, which identifies inclusion as a first priority, will be essential.
The successful candidate will be committed to evidence-informed practice with a strong vision for inclusive education. We are looking for a fearless champion of SEND learners but one who also has the interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive, mutually respectful relationships. They will also have the empathy to understand the pressures with the SEND system, both regionally and nationally, and the ability to collaboratively problem-solve.
So if this sounds like a challenge you would relish, please do consider applying to join our dedicated, friendly and values-led Learning and Skills team at Hull City Council. You will find yourself in the privileged position of making a real difference to the lives of children and young people with SEND and their families.
