At the Civil Works Alliance (CWA), we're dedicated to not only constructing monumental projects like the Sizewell C power station but also to ensuring our activities enhance and protect our natural surroundings. As part of our commitment, we're looking for a passionate and experienced Site Ecologist to provide essential support and pragmatic advice to our contract and operational teams on-site.
Essential experience:
* Expert Knowledge: Strong understanding of ecological management, mitigation, and legislation relevant to development
* Academic Background: Educated to degree or Masters level in Ecology or a related subject
* Commercial Awareness: Good level of commercial awareness and understanding of environmental management for construction sites
* Technical Skills: Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
* Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
* CIEEM Membership: Active membership in the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM)
* Flexibility: Full UK driver's license and willingness to travel
* Industry Experience: Experience working on large-scale infrastructure construction projects
Desirable qualities and experience:
Holding at least one protected species survey licence.
As a Site Ecologist, you will:
* Practical Support: Offer on-the-ground surveys, inspections, and watching briefs, ensuring ecological requirements are met according to program, budget, and quality standards
* Problem Solving: Find practical, cost-effective solutions to ecological challenges faced by our construction teams
* Liaison: Work closely with design teams, clients, and stakeholders to ensure ecological considerations are integrated seamlessly
* Consultancy Services: Provide ecological consultancy services, including surveys, mitigation, enhancement design, and on-site support
* Technical Support: Actively contribute to Biodiversity Net Gain initiatives and help foster a culture of continual improvement in ecological practices
Your Key Accountabilities
* Reporting to the Balfour Beatty Head of Sustainability: Natural Environment and project leads, your responsibilities will include:
* Offering pragmatic advice and support on ecological requirements to operational teams
* Developing and supporting the implementation of ecological management plans
* Building and maintaining relationships with regulators, clients, design teams, and internal stakeholders
* Ensuring site compliance with ecological legislation and providing coaching on applying controls and mitigations effectively
* Maintaining the company environmental management system and liaising with senior team leads on necessary updates
* Investigating and reporting ecological incidents
* Conducting habitat suitability assessments and protected species surveys
