Job Introduction
BBC Media Action is the BBC's international development organisation, and we believe in the power of media and communication for good. We work in more than 20 countries around the world, supporting the independent media essential to democracy and development. Each year our projects and programmes reach over 100 million people facing poverty, inequality and insecurity with information they can trust, helping to improve health, bridge divides, challenge prejudice, and save and change lives. We follow the editorial standards and values of the BBC, but we rely on funding from donors and partners to carry out our work.
We are now looking for an experienced programme maker, journalist or multimedia producer to support editorial and multimedia skills across Media Action's country offices. Working closely with producers, researchers and project delivery teams, the successful candidate will support teams creating output for a wide range of platforms (particularly and increasingly digital platforms).
Main Responsibilities
The role will provide expert advice and support to our programme makers and content creators across the world, with a focus on editorial skills and multimedia production. You'll be supporting BBC Media Action production teams to deliver high-quality and impactful content which aligns with BBC editorial values and BBC Media Action project goals. You will design and facilitate training for production and editorial teams and will facilitate access to other training material and learning opportunities within the BBC. You'll also make sure that our teams are up to date with the latest digital and other media trends.
You will support in-country editorial teams with creative brainstorming and content design processes, and lead or participate in content review and feedback. And you will work to build networks and collaborations between editorial and production teams across BBC Media Action, helping to create and facilitate regular peer-to-peer support and learning across countries.
As well as planning and delivering proactive advice and support, you'll provide first-line editorial advice to our heads of production and support senior managers with making tricky editorial decisions, liaising regularly with the wider BBC Editorial Policy team.
The role will place great emphasis on building a stronger relationship between BBC Media Action's country offices and other creative and editorial teams across the BBC. You'll liaise closely with country offices to gauge their current BBC relationship and, accordingly, will help devise recommendations about how country teams can benefit from a deeper relationship with the rest of the BBC. Spreading the word about BBC Media Action's own creative content to BBC stakeholders will also be an important part of this role.
Are you the right candidate?
Critically, you will have strong editorial judgement and substantial content-making experience, particularly for digital platforms. Recent and relevant experience working in an editorial, production or training / capacity strengthening role in one of the countries where BBC Media Action operates is also essential.
Beyond these key criteria, you will also need:
1. Knowledge of media markets and audiences in different parts of the world
2. Experience of helping media organisations and practitioners improve their practice and adapt to new techniques and technologies
3. An understanding or willingness to learn about the various BBC departments with whom we could strengthen our current relationships
4. Experience of designing and delivering training (face to face and online) on a range of topics.
5. A fair standard of communication and presentation skills in English, both oral and written
Ideally, you will also bring:
1. Experience of working in media development or media-for-development projects.
2. Good existing understanding of, and relationships with, other parts of the BBC
3. Experience of running workshops and delivering effective training - both remote and face to face
4. Good understanding of social media platforms
