This is an exciting opportunity for someone to join the Gastroenterology department at Salisbury. The Gastroenterology department is part of the Gastrointestinal (GI) Unit in Salisbury, which is within the Surgical Directorate.
Patients on the gastroenterology ward are cared for by a Gastroenterology Consultant or by a General Medical Consultant, depending on their presenting complaint. The successful candidate will join the General Medical team to provide senior support with the care of general medical patients on the main gastroenterology ward, as well as medical patients on linked outlying wards. Junior doctors in training rotating to gastroenterology work with both the Gastroenterology and General Medical teams. We are looking for a doctor who can work at Registrar level to provide support to the consultant with senior decision making and support junior doctors on the team to develop their clinical and non-clinical skills.
As a department, we fully embrace multidisciplinary team working, believing that this best serves the needs of our patients. The successful candidate will work within a supportive medical team and liaise closely with nursing staff on the ward, Clinical Nurse Specialists and members of the wider healthcare team. We are a friendly and cohesive department with weekly teaching, regular M+M meetings and opportunities to take part in audit and other clinical governance activity.
The Trust works in collaboration with other acute Trusts to provide clinical networks of care ensuring services to the population are both easily accessible and provide high quality care. In this regard it sees fast access to emergency care and to comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services as fundamental to its future.
Each day starts with a board round and discussion of all patients with the nurse in charge, discharge team and therapy team to confirm estimated date of discharge and highlight any acute issues. Full Consultant ward rounds usually occur thrice weekly, although daily contact with the team is maintained. Outpatient experience through clinics will be strongly encouraged and tailored to the candidate’s training needs. Although this post is linked to the gastroenterology service, clinic experience in other medical specialties would be encouraged, depending on the interests of the appointee.
The post holder will be expected to participate in clinical governance activities on the ward including infection control and antibiotic audits and multidisciplinary ward forums. He/she will also be expected to help deliver teaching and training to more junior colleagues. The post holder will have a designated clinical supervisor whom they will meet on a regular basis.
