There are a total of 25 cardiology beds. Cardiology patients are admitted on the cardiology ward (14 beds) and Coronary care Unit (11 beds). The consultant will be responsible for the patients admitted under his care and will be supported by a Specialist Registrar, Core Medical Trainee (CT) and FY1 Doctor. All the cardiologists hold outpatient clinics based at Thomas Linacre Centre at Wigan, at Leigh Infirmary, Platt Bridge Health centre or Wrightington Hospital, as well as virtual clinics. The cardiology department at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, Wigan is located in a purpose built area. An extension of the day-case unit (Radial Lounge) has opened recently. This area is being developed as part of the community diagnostic centre investment CORONARY CARE UNIT There is 11 bedded state of art Coronary Care Unit at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, Wigan. It has all the modern facilities for Temporary Pacing, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump, CPAP and facilities for DC Cardioversion. It treats approximately 1,000 patients a year. It is situated adjacent to the cardiac catheter lab. CARDIAC CATHETER LABORATORY There are two state of the art Cardiac Catheter Laboratory with facilities for rotational atherectomy, IVUS, OCT and pressure wire. There are plans to obtain shock wave lithotripsy in the near future. Applications are invited to apply for a permanent post as Consultant Cardiologist with Specialist interest in Coronary Intervention, to provide a comprehensive cardiac care to patients at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, Wigan and Leigh Infirmary, Leigh. A very successful Coronary Intervention programme has been running since 2007 at the RAIE Wigan site. The service is supported by 3 Interventional Cardiologists from Wigan and 3 visiting Interventional Cardiologists from Salford and MFT. There is availability of IVUS, OCT, Pressure wire systems (Resting-FFR and conventional FFR), rotational atherectomy and IVL. It is expected that the new appointee will maintain the high standards already set, will bring fresh ideas and innovations and will further develop the Coronary interventional programme in the Northwest Sector Catheter Lab, based at Wigan, in partnership with the other Catheter Labs in the Greater Manchester and the existing Interventional Cardiologists of the Northwest Sector (Bolton, Salford & Wigan). The appointee should be fully trained in percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) and should currently be a high-volume PCI operator. The new appointee will get at least 2 catheter lab sessions per week at the Cardiac Cather Lab in Wigan and other cardiac clinical sessions.
