Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, easily reached in just over 2 hours (flying time) from London, Bristol or Manchester airports. The post is based at the St. Bernards Hospital located by the waterfront, overlooking the straits of Gibraltar & Northern Africa. English is the official main language with Spanish widely spoken. Applications are invited from experienced Junior Doctors in Adult General Internal Medicine (GIM) for appointment to the above vacancy within the Gibraltar Health Authority (GHA). The GHA is organised and modelled on the UK NHS and follows traditions of British medical practice. Given the small nature of the teams and the unselected nature of the GIM take, this post provides an excellent opportunity for doctors to be exposed to the full panoply of presentations, gain experience and confidence in their management and to learn and up-skill in procedures (e.g. chest drain insertion, lumber puncture, paracentesis) whilst benefitting from close supervision by the consultant body. Main duties of the job The Medical Team consists of 10 consultant specialists, with 6 participating in a 1 in 6 General Internal Medicine (GIM) on-call rota. Specialties include Cardiology, Diabetes & Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Haematology, Nephrology, Older Peoples Medicine (OPM), Respiratory, Rheumatology, and Neurology (supported by a visiting service). The team is supported by up to 10 Clinical Fellows (CFs), with 3 providing weekday cover for the acute medical ward and 7 covering admissions and medical patients on full-shift rotas compliant with EWTD. Consultants offer 24/7 non-resident on-call support and are available for remote or in-person advice. Post-take ward rounds occur twice daily, 7 days a week, with consultants available for advice or bedside review. Rotas for Surgery, Anaesthesia/Critical Care, and Accident & Emergency are separate. This role does not involve pediatric responsibilities, as the pediatric department is staffed by its own consultants. There are regular internal CPD and Morbidity and Mortality sessions and wider organizational-level CPD sessions which the successful applicant will be encouraged to actively participate in. The Outpatient facilities and the Consultant offices are located in St Bernards Hospital on the Fifth Floor in the Medical Investigation Unit. This unit also houses the Endoscopy unit, bronchoscopy, as well as cardiology and respiratory investigation units and the Haemodialysis Unit. The successful candidate will play an important role in the day to day work associated with the care of medical inpatients and the running of the department closely supervised by the Consultants. These roles include: In patient management, including daily ward round and ongoing patient care for patients under the care of the medical team Emergency on-call covering acute admissions via A&E and GP referrals Seeing and reviewing referrals on the surgical ward Undertaking ward based procedures, subject to competence e.g. lumbar puncture, abdominocentesis, thoracocentesis, chest/abdominal drain insertion. A willingness to cross cover and assist colleagues depending on the varying clinical demands on a given day is a key requirement of this role.
