An incredible opportunity has become available for a Trainee / Junior Gardener to join a team on a horticulturally diverse and aesthetically beautiful private garden in Salisbury, Wiltshire.
Although previous experience is not essential, it will be important for candidates to demonstrate a commitment to pursuing a career in amenity horticulture. As such, it would be advantageous to show a background in gardening on private estates, volunteering, or paid employment. However, full training on the job will be offered working with an experienced team of six gardeners.
The garden is approximately 35 acres plus woodland and water meadows. All areas are maintained along organic lines, with a good-sized vegetable garden where production is to soil association standards. The main formal gardens have extensive lawns and borders. Hedges, including Beech, Hornbeam, Yew, and box frame the garden; some of these are over 5 metres high. A large water garden, swimming pool garden, and water meadows, lakes, and large wildflower meadows continue the garden in a less formal manner. The house and garden are alongside the river Avon providing a peaceful aspect. Three good-sized greenhouses and three large poly tunnels provide a productive heart.
It will be a requirement for candidates to wish to engage in an apprenticeship as an attendee at a local college or as a distance learner. It will be subject to discussion with the candidates as to which of these options is best for the individual and employer. Practical training will include chainsaw (CS 30/31), pesticide PA1/6 certificates, and a level 2 first aid course. Other practical courses are possible.
The role is full time for a period of two years. Working hours are: 5 days per week of 40 hours. Normally 8am to 4:30pm with 30 minutes for lunch. Fully funded study leave to attend college or an equivalent time to pursue distance learning to a level of at least level 2 or level 3, depending on the individual’s abilities, subject to discussion. Holiday leave is 21 days plus bank holidays (n.b. holidays will have to fit the academic year). Weekend duty in a rota may be required. Due to the remote location and the possible need to travel to college, one’s own transport will be necessary.
The job is, of necessity, outdoors, with the requirement to work in all weathers and is physically demanding. All weather and protective clothing and PPE will be provided.
Salary will be subject to experience but will be at least minimum wage (age related) to a maximum of £26,000. A pension scheme will be open after 3 months with a 5% employer contribution and 3% employee.
This is an exciting role for which the successful candidate will gain a thorough grounding in all aspects of private-estate gardening.
