We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Transfusion Practitioner to join the existing transfusion team at The Royal Marsden. We are looking for a person with experience of clinical or laboratory blood transfusion, and ideally experience as a Transfusion Practitioner. This is a full-time permanent position which will predominately be based at Sutton site but will occasionally require cross site working at Chelsea.
The main responsibility of the role is to work with multi professional teams to promote and support the safe and appropriate use of blood components and provide the highest quality of transfusion care for patients. Education and training are key elements of the role and experience of planning and delivering education is required.
This is an autonomous role, with support from an Advanced Transfusion Practitioner, you therefore need to be flexible, self-motivated and innovative in your approach. The ability to communicate well is essential.
You must have knowledge of current transfusion evidence base and patient blood management initiatives and ideally experience of implementing service changes in relation to recommendations.

Main duties of the job
1. To enhance patient care and outcomes in relation to patient blood management, this is through audit feedback, reviewing patient’s interventions and outcomes and engaging staff in education and learning regarding clinical indications for transfusion.
2. To ensure patient safety through evidenced based policy and guidelines for transfusion as well as education on safe and effective transfusion for all trust staff
3. To assist in the daily operation of electronic blood track, ensuring staff are competent in the use of technology and providing training and user support at the bedside.

4. Provide specialised transfusion advice within professional competence, which optimises patient blood management and improves patient outcomes in relation to transfusion.
5. Provide an effective link between the Transfusion Laboratory and medical / nursing staff so that problems and adverse incidents can be fully investigated. Will assist on root cause analysis and subsequent policy development when required.
6. Act as a resource to medical and nursing staff, supporting and giving expert advice / information on aspects of transfusion practice.
7. Meet with patients and their families to discuss any concerns and explain about transfusion procedures and give support in making transfusion decisions
8. Work with all staff to identify PBM measures that can be implemented, including working with surgical teams to manage blood components effectively during surgery

Qualifications Academic/Professional & Experience
Essential criteria
9. Degree or equivalent in healthcare related subject
10. Registered Healthcare Professional or Biomedical Scientist
11. Evidence of recent continuing professional development
12. Substantial post registration experience working at band 6 or above, with either experience of undertaking the transfusion practitioner role or transfusion experience relevant to the role
13. Experience of teaching

Flu Vaccination – What We Expect of our Staff
At The Royal Marsden we have an immune compromised patient population who we must protect as much as we can against the flu virus. Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands of people in the UK. Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.
The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
