DT Technician
JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: DT Technician
Responsible to: Head of DT
Hours: 30 hours per week to be worked over 5 days. Hours to be agreed between the core hours of 8:00am to 3:30pm 38 weeks plus 5 additional days (39 working weeks)
MAIN PURPOSE
To ensure the appropriate equipment and resources are available and maintained to a satisfactory standard to support student learning in a safe working environment.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
1. Maintain a safe and tidy working environment in the workshops and preparation areas.
2. Preparation of resources for lessons to assist the teacher in delivery of curriculum.
3. Support Teachers in the delivery of Design Technology classes by maintaining equipment and appropriate resources. Follow a workshop maintenance programme.
4. Provide Classroom support to Teachers, including assisting in the development of new practical activities.
5. Monitor resources and maintain inventories of equipment and tools.
6. Carry out visual and other routine safety checks (H&S), ensuring that COSHH and other Health and Safety regulations are applied in all procedures and areas for which responsibility is allocated.
7. Ensure tools and equipment are available and in working order and carry out routine repairs to equipment, however any electrical/mechanical repairs are sent to external contractors.
Key Tasks
1. Prepare materials and equipment for lessons and projects including preparation of demonstration materials and resources.
2. Ensure tools and equipment are available and in working order.
3. Organise materials in the department.
4. Cutting up of acrylic and preparation of wood, metal and other materials.
5. Construct items for demonstration.
6. Admin – carry out admin duties, which may include preparing teaching materials, collating photocopying resources, ordering of materials and stock taking and booklets as requested by the Head of Department.
To maintain equipment and workshops in accordance with Health & Safety and security requirements and report all faults and concerns to the Head of Department.
1. Carry out weekly Health and Safety checks on all equipment and machinery and report directly to the Head of Department.
2. Carry out routine repairs of tools as necessary.
3. Ensure emergency stops are working.
4. Eye protection is available.
5. Empty and clean the dust extraction filters as required by the manufacturer.
6. All machines are in a safe working order, lathes, circular, band saws and laser cutter.
7. All electrical breaker circuits are operating.
8. Ensure tools and equipment are in secure storage.
9. Fire extinguishers are in place and not damaged.
10. Tidy the sink areas and tool cupboards.
11. Support in undertaking and carrying out risk assessments.
12. At times physical effort required – carrying of equipment – within Health & Safety guidelines.
To utilise machines in a school workshop environment i.e. lathes, wood working machines, drills, CAM and other specialist equipment.
To maintain, monitor and advise levels of stock and assist the Head of Department in the ordering of materials and equipment. Checking deliveries and making occasional purchases through petty cash.
To assist staff in the preparing and setting up displays for school events.
To provide support for teachers during practical lessons, working with and supervising small groups of students undertaking project work within the workshop.
To undertake other tasks relevant to the work of the Design Technology department or the needs of the school as they may arise.
To attend all relevant staff meetings and INSET days when required.
Reporting and Management
Closely controlled by Health and Safety Legislation. Uses initiative and experience to offer students alternatives to achieve their design criteria by creative use of resources. Needs to encourage exploration of ideas, but recognise limitations.
Other Specific Duties
1. Play a full part in the life of the school community, to support its mission and ethos and to encourage staff and students to follow this example.
2. Assist in the preparation for educational visits, and where appropriate accompany students.
3. Continue personal development as agreed.
4. Comply with the school’s Health and Safety Policy.
5. Uphold the principles of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and be aware that safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.
