A position exists for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on dynamic experimental mechanics.
The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge, UK.
We are starting a new project with the aim of investigating energy focussing induced by dynamic instabilities in materials. Using laboratory gas gun impact facilities, the project will investigate the conditions under which dynamic instabilities that produce material jets are induced. The post-holder will be required to build the approach shock tube facilities, conduct the dynamic experiments on model materials and use a range of techniques to detect the instabilities including high-speed photography and measuring energy spectra.
The project is a collaborative project being conducted along with partner universities in the US. The role holder is expected to not only collaborate extensively within the research group at Cambridge but also with our external partners. This includes regular meetings and joint publications. The role holder is also expected to assist with grant administration and in writing reports for funding bodies.
The skills, qualifications, and experience required to perform the role are wide. The specific skills include a good working knowledge of dynamic testing techniques, mechanical measurement methods, and digital correlation methods. The applicant will have obtained or be close to obtaining a PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related field with a strong background in continuum mechanics.
Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 24 months in the first instance.
