Job overview
This job will be suitable for candidates with experience in Neurosurgery at a trainee level (≥5 years) and ideally for those who have completed their neurosurgical training or are practicing neurosurgeons with a desire to obtain experience in expanded endoscopic endonasal and complementary open skull base work. It will be ideal for those with some prior experience of open skull base and basic endoscopic endonasal neurosurgery.
The successful applicant will be exposed to the full spectrum of endoscopic endonasal surgery with an emphasis on the expanded techniques. This will include relevant work in the sagittal and the coronal skull base with comprehensive exposure to expanded sellar and suprasellar approaches as well as the transpterygoid approaches. The surgical pathologies being treated will include pituitary (functional and non-functional adenomas), craniopharyngiomas, skull base meningiomas, chordoma and chondrosarcomas, sinonasal pathologies, trigeminal schwannomas, and other posterior fossa meningiomas.
Main duties of the job
The fellow will provide assistance in theatre, gradually assuming increasing responsibility under supervision; undertake a daily ward round and liaise with the team regarding management decisions. They will attend outpatients and clinical meetings.
Specific to the skull base/pituitary service there will be: complex endoscopic endonasal clinic (once/month); open skull base/vascular clinic (once/month); joint pituitary clinic (twice/month); post-operative sinonasal clinic (twice/month); and fortnightly skull base/pituitary MDT. These clinics will highlight our paradigm pertinent to the preoperative work-up and postoperative care of the patients.
In addition, there is a daily 7:30 a.m. combined clinical and radiology meeting; a weekly general Neuro-oncology tumour MDT, weekly epilepsy and movement disorders MDT, regular journal clubs, and an academic teaching program.
