The postholder will be responsible for the specification and control of processes in the manufacture of castings at GW.
To include the specification of process methodology, including determining best practice for the manufacture of casting alloys to incorporate metal chemistry, metal preparation, and heat treatment.
Perform casting defect/failure investigations and reporting thereof to internal and external customers.
Specification and control of metal processes relating to castings and heat treatment of castings.
Characterisation of casting capabilities for all process and material types and management of this knowledge base.
Research and develop new and existing processes to provide best-in-class performance in the chosen products and markets of the business, including investigating alternative alloys with higher mechanical properties and thermal conductivity at elevated temperatures.
Provide guidance to shop floor personnel on practical methods of introducing metals to moulds to minimize damage to metal quality.
Key Competencies And Experience
1. A recognised formal engineering qualification or demonstrable significant experience in relevant fields.
2. Relevant foundry/materials research experience, aluminum preferred but ferrous accepted.
3. Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
4. Good communication and ability to work within a team.
5. Ability to work from their own initiative, self-motivated.
6. Current, valid driving licence.
7. This role includes the possibility of overseas travel.
8. Proficiency in CAD software would be desirable for this role.
Key Performance Measures
1. Development of high-performance aluminum alloys specifically for high strength powertrain products at high temperature.
2. Development of improved grain refinement.
3. Number of materials datasets completed.
4. Number of research projects completed.
