About Network Rail
The West Coast South route stretches from the south of Crewe to London Euston, carrying millions of passengers, and up to 10% of the country's freight traffic each year. Our route contains the West Coast main line which stretches over 1,000 miles of track and has 64 passenger stations. It's also the busiest mixed-use railway in Europe, forming Anglo-Scottish journeys between London, Glasgow and Edinburgh, as well as providing commuter links to the capital through Hertfordshire, Northamptonshire, and Buckinghamshire.
The West Coast main line was electrified in the 1960s, allowing for longer, faster train services for passengers and freight. This meant that London Euston Station had to be rebuilt to create space for the new overhead equipment and was the first station in London to provide express passenger journeys to distant cities.
Our North West & Central region runs from London Euston and Marylebone in the South through the Chiltern and West Midlands regions, the North West of England, and Cumbria before joining with Scotland at Gretna. We are home to the West Coast Mainline, the busiest mixed-use railway in Europe, serving London, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Edinburgh, and Glasgow.
We are committed to transforming the North West & Central region into a customer-focused service organisation, putting passengers first. We will prioritise safe, reliable train services against the ongoing need to build a bigger, better railway capable of transporting more people and produce in the future.
For us, Diversity means recognising differences between people while valuing the contribution they make. Inclusion means creating safe and welcoming workplaces with fair cultures that encourage innovative and fresh ways of thinking.
We value the commitments you may have outside of work and will consider flexible and hybrid working applications. If we can make it work we will!
Brief Description
Monitor contractors on site activities as Network Rail's representative so that their site activities are conducted in a safe and efficient manner with minimum impact on the environment and operational railway, and whether the work is of a high standard and complies with the relevant specifications and latest practices.
About the role (External)
Every day will be different, but you can expect to be involved in the following activities:
1. Work with contractors to deliver site activities that comply with the Guide to Railway Investment Projects (GRIP), relevant rules, regulations, Railway Group and Network Rail's company standards and all applicable procedures and legislation.
2. Encourage an awareness of the importance of HSQE and good workmanship by regular communication with all contractors, and make the contractor aware of NR's policy for reporting accidents/incidents.
3. Review & accept in conjunction with the Protection Engineer contract documentation. Check whether that contractor has in place adequate communication plans to inform line-side residents of proposed works.
4. Monitor validity of Contractors employees competency documentation, prior to works commencing and during all phases of work, using sentinel and construction industry checklists.
5. In liaison with the contractor, jointly inspect first off examples of elements of the works, at the earliest opportunity, in order to agree the detailed workmanship standards for consistent application to the whole of the works.
6. Maintain a regular and frequent site presence at all worksites and to continually monitor, and correct where necessary, the standard and methods of work, being always vigilant for inadequacies. Where remedial actions are required confirm whether non-conformance reports are raised, and closed out in an auditable manner. Maintain site diary as appropriate.
7. Monitor progress of the works by regular site visits, inspections, and progress meetings, comparing work in progress with contract documents and information given at site meetings and with the overall contract programme. Locally agree site records with the contractor for payment purposes.
