The Kilchoan Estate is a cultural and educational enterprise in rewilding, preservation & sustainability. Across 1500 acres we are restoring habitats, creating gardens and caring for landscapes & livestock. Situated 20 miles South of Oban, on the north shores of Loch Melfort, the estate rises from sea-level to 270m encompassing a range of distinct habitats including grasslands, peatlands, semi-natural ancient woodland, newly planted native woodland & exotic forestry plantations. We run several marine projects including a native oyster restoration project and a kelp farm. We collaborate with many organisations, universities and NGOs to help achieve the organisations vision.
We are looking for enthusiastic applicants to join our team and assist with the development of the estate, gardens and grounds with a focus on the integration of livestock into a conservation grazing rotation.
The role will be varied, encompassing a range of tasks. As part of the estate team this is a practical role that will also assist the garden & building teams. The ideal candidate must be capable of following instruction and using their own initiative and expertise, be physically fit and happy to work in all-weather conditions.
Duties will include (but are not limited too) grass cutting, tree planting, fencing, path creation, assisting wildlife monitoring & habitat management. The estate team works on both marine and terrestrial projects.
The main responsibilities for this role are
• Day to day interaction with highland cattle.
• Processing and co-ordinating the use of firewood across all properties.
• Tractor driving and maintenance, use of front loader bucket, forks and grab. Use of PTO driven implements- toppers, pan mixers etc.
Necessary
• Tractor driving & operation experience.
• An interest and experience in handling of and care for livestock.
Desirable
• Chainsaw certificate
• Spraying certification- herbicides
• Trailer use
Training, both formal and informal offered. Ongoing personal, professional development supported.
