Job summary The Department of Upper Gastrointestinal and General Surgery in North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust is looking for an enthusiastic new colleague to join us on our journey to provide high quality surgical care for the future in an organisation committed to clinical leadership and medical education. We provide a 24/7 consultant of the week service for emergency general surgery patients, elective surgical operating lists, outpatient clinics. Clinical duties are supported by a 24/7 middle grade tier. We have a strong composite workforce made up of Surgical ACP's, Physician Associates and Doctors Assistants, supporting our SDEC and ward areas, as well as clinics and endoscopy. We also have a team of Nurse Specialists covering the needs of the service. A full range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are available including Endoscopy, CT, MRI and interventional radiology. The department delivers a robust teaching programme for doctors in training, foundation doctors, Physicians Associates and Surgical Care Practitioners. Main duties of the job We are looking for an enthusiastic surgeon to join a team of consultants to deliver elective and emergency General Surgery and Upper GI services. We will work with you to shape your job plan upon successful appointment, review it with you after three months and then annually - so you can maintain the perfect fit. We are happy to explore portfolio roles with opportunities in academic posts, leadership and medical education. We will also provide the essential resources to support you in your duties, including administrative support. There is a four tier 24/7 on-call rota at Carlisle. The 12 gastrointestinal (Upper GI/HPB and Colorectal) surgeons, including the successful candidate, will be responsible for managing general surgical emergencies on a 1 in 6 weekdays first on-call, 1 in 6 second on-call, 1 in 12 weekday nights and 1 in 12 weekends basis at Carlisle. 24-hour emergency theatre is currently available at Carlisle. There is a dedicated CEPOD list, which runs daily from 8am-5pm. The successful candidate will be expected to be trained and competent in the elective and emergency management of Upper GI and general surgery conditions. As a senior employee of the Trust, the post holder will be expected to co-operate with and support medical, clinical and managerial colleagues in delivering high quality care for patients within the Trust.
