As the principal museum of the University of Cambridge and the largest cultural venue in the region, The Fitzwilliam Museum acts as a crucial bridge between the University, the City and the rest of the world, and has an international reputation for extraordinary research, world-class exhibitions, award-winning public programmes, and significant collections spanning many cultures and centuries.
We are now looking for a fixed-term curator to work with our outstanding collection of European historic and modern paintings and drawings, ranging from the 12th century to the early 20th century. You will contribute to the overall care of, and public access to, the collections through display and interpretation, teaching, and public engagement, in support of the Museum's Mission and Vision. You will work with wider curatorial colleagues on changes to the collection displays, enhancing documentation, enabling research access, and performing other curatorial duties. The role may include supporting the acquisition of new artworks and objects in line with the Collections Development Strategy.
The post-holder will be knowledgeable about, and have experience of working with, historic and modern European paintings and drawings (the collection is particularly strong in works from Britain, France, and Italy), and be committed to embracing new perspectives on the collection. They will have a track record in exhibitions/displays and may have contributed to other activities (e.g., publications, programming, digital outputs) relating to historic and modern European paintings and drawings.
In return, we offer an encouraging and supportive environment, generous holiday allowance, an attractive pension scheme, and many employee benefits such as a shopping discounts scheme.
Temporary cover: This post is fixed-term for 12 months or the return of the post holder, whichever is earlier.
Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a basic disclosure (criminal records check) and a security check.
Applications are welcome from internal candidates who would like to apply for the role on the basis of a secondment from their current role in the University.
