As an intergovernmental organisation across 6 sites in the UK and Europe, We are seeking an experienced Finance Business Partner to join the EMBL-EBI Office, based at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge, UK.
Reporting directly to the EBI Budget Office Manager, you will play a key role in supporting the financial administration of externally funded research grants.
Your role As a Finance Business Partner, you will be responsible for managing the financial post-award activities of a portfolio of grants, working closely with Principal Investigators (PIs) and Group Team Leaders (GTLs) to align funding with EMBL-EBIs strategic objectives. Your key responsibilities will include:
Overseeing the financial administration of research projects, including budget preparation, expenditure monitoring, and financial reporting to funding bodies.
Conducting quality reviews to ensure compliance with funding agency regulations.
Supporting the development and user acceptance testing of financial systems, including the Workday-based management accounting system.
Collaborating with key stakeholders across EMBL-EBI, including the Directors Office, faculty, and scientific/non-scientific departments .
Contributing to the continuous improvement of post-award grant management processes to enhance efficiency and service quality.
Proactively identifying and mitigating financial risks, alerting PIs where necessary.
Assisting project managers with payment distribution to research partners.
Preparing and submitting routine and ad-hoc financial reports .
Troubleshooting financial and administrative challenges.
We are looking for experience in the following areas;
Minimum 5 years of experience in a well-regarded medium/large company.
Experience of financial/budgetary control and management.
Experience in providing financial advice to non-finance colleagues/audience.
Excellent analytical and organisational skills.
Advanced Excel spreadsheet and modelling skills
Proficiency in accounting software (SAP and Workday preferred).
You are Team Player but have the ability to work independently
Flexible approach to work and ability to plan, organise and prioritise own workload.
Ability to use own initiative to work proactively and independently, often working to deadlines set by senior leaders & others within the organisation
Excellent communication skills, written and oral -
Presentational skills, the ability to convey financial information to leaders within EMBL
Excellent general interpersonal skills, including diplomacy and negotiating skills, with the ability to hold difficult conversations with a variety of different colleagues.
The following maybe advantageous but not essential
Experience of working in an international organisation
University degree in finance.
A recently or part-qualified accountant (ACMA, ACA, ACCA, CIPFA) or equivalent level of experience with up-to-date professional knowledge
Other Information Minimal travel to our German, Heidelberg site is anticipated, although travel for training and team meetings may be required from time to time.
Our team works in a hybrid pattern, this includes spending at least 2 days working from our office in Hinxton.
Interviews, as part of the interview process we will ask candidates to complete some technical assessment and a presentation. The topic will be shared with invited candidates only. We plan to hold panel interviews remotely via Zoom 17 & 18 March 2025; with introductory calls starting 6 & 7 March 2025.
