Sandwell Academy could be for you
Sandwell Academy is one of the top performing schools in the region. Every year over a thousand students apply to join the Academy in Year 7, while year on year our sixth form is heavily oversubscribed. We place a real emphasis on developing the whole child, with outstanding enrichment and extracurricular opportunities providing a broad experience for our students.
We are an Academy where the culture of celebrating success in all its forms is at the heart of what we do. Giving the best possible education to our students is our core purpose, and developing our highly talented staff is the way that we do this.
At Sandwell Academy we value colleagues at every stage of their career. If you are entering the profession, we offer a bespoke ECT programme that puts your needs first; to more experienced staff we provide the conditions for you to flourish and to take charge of your own professional development.
Due to continued growth we are now seeking a Teacher of Music to join our team from September 2025.
The Department
The Performing Arts team currently comprises three specialist teachers who also teach in collaboration and across the art forms. In addition, there are external staff with music expertise who contribute to our extra-curricular programme. We have four specialised teaching venues: a music technology suite, ensemble music room, drama studio and dance studio. We also regularly use the Academy’s theatre as a performance venue.
All students in Year 7, 8 and 9 study Music. At KS4, we offer BTEC Tech Awards in Music Practice and Performing Arts. All subjects are popular options, and as an inclusive department, we support students with all backgrounds and abilities.
The BTEC National Extended Certificate and the National Diploma in Performing Arts are offered Post-16, as well as the BTEC National Extended Certificate in Music Performance. Recruitment is by interview and audition and is open to students from across the local area. Many of our students go on to continue their studies in the Arts at universities and the department actively supports their preparation for this process.
There is a variety of opportunities for students to develop their skills as part of our extra-curricular provision; these include Performing Arts Clubs as well as Music School. Within Music School, Guitars, Drums, Keyboard and Vocals are offered. All Music School students take part in ensemble rehearsals to develop their collaborative skills and regular performances to showcase their work. They also accompany the Sports Events performing at Sandwell Run and Sports Day.
We hold several major Academy performances each year, including a Christmas Concert, Easter Concert, Summer Fair and the annual Academy Production. Recent shows have included ‘Tick Tick Boom’, ‘We Will Rock You’ and ‘All Shook Up’. BTEC students also host regular singing, acting and dancing performances in the theatre as part of their coursework assessments.
We are looking for a member of staff who enjoys working with, and inspiring talented young people, with the ability to be able to contribute to the delivery of high quality Performing Arts activities specialising in Drama.
