Band 7 Antenatal/ Postnatal Ward Manager
Due to career progression of the current postholder, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a forward-thinking, enthusiastic, and experienced midwife to join our established senior midwifery team at the QE Maternity Department as Antenatal/ Postnatal Ward Manager.
As Antenatal/ Postnatal Ward Manager, you will have leadership responsibility for the ward area, providing guidance and support to the core team, rotational midwives, and support staff on the ward. You will work closely in your role with our Acute and Outpatient Matrons, the Lead Midwife for Quality and Safety, and the ward managers to be accountable and responsible for this key area of our maternity service.
The Maternity and SCBU services are part of the wider Surgical Business Unit within the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Within the Women's Health Services stream, as an operational Ward Manager and Leader, you will support the Matrons, Head of Midwifery, Service Line Manager, and the Associate Director of the Surgical Business Unit to ensure our maternity services are safe, progressive, and meet the needs of our service users and their families.
The successful applicant for this post will work in partnership with our Senior Leadership team and our service users to develop and implement the maternity transformation agenda at a local level, ensuring that the team, service users, and their families are engaged, listened to, and supported at every step.
Main duties of the job
* To provide designated leadership and management responsibility for the Antenatal and Postnatal Ward.
* To provide the highest standard of holistic, safe, and effective care through the effective use of evidence-based practice in line with agreed local and national standards to ensure constant Quality Improvement within the ward area.
* To provide a continuously improving service in line with the clinical governance framework, Trust objectives, and the NHS performance framework.
* To provide clinical leadership, expertise, advice, and support to the midwifery and multi-professional team to facilitate the effective delivery of care to service users at all times.
* To support and continually develop staff to ensure they have the appropriate level of skill, knowledge, and competence to meet service/specialty requirements.
* Provide midwifery expertise, ensuring that all staff are supported in their practice on a day-to-day and ongoing basis.
* Use advanced decision-making skills to utilize all available resources to deliver highly complex individualised care effectively and efficiently in a timely manner.

The QE Maternity unit is a Consultant Led Obstetric unit offering parallel, high profile Midwifery Led Care. The unit prides itself on the partnership working between midwifery and medical teams, which enables 'wraparound' care to all women, placing the women and their families at 'the core' of everything we do. We are constantly gaining assurance that our services are safe, effective, and well led through clinical audit and patient feedback. In 2016, we received a successful CQC assessment report and have been previously assessed at CNST Level 3.
Midwives appointed within the Trust will receive a comprehensive Induction period. Opportunities exist for ongoing professional development and access is available to a range of in-service and external training programs, and all Midwives will be well supported within their role.
Job responsibilities

* Accountable for the planning and delivery of all aspects of patient care throughout the working period as set out in the NMC Code.
* To provide a continuously improving service in line with the clinical governance framework, Trust objectives, and the NHS performance framework.
* To provide clinical leadership, expertise, advice, and support to the midwifery and multi-professional team to facilitate the effective delivery of care to patients at all times.
* To support and continually develop staff to ensure they have the appropriate level of skill, knowledge, and competence to meet service/specialty requirements.
* Provide specialist midwifery expertise, ensuring all staff are supported in their practice on a day-to-day and ongoing basis with particular emphasis on antenatal care.
* Support the Public Health Midwife with key deliverables of the Public Health Maternity strategy.
* To ensure the assessment, development, and evaluation of programmes of care in order to coordinate the holistic needs of women and their families. To be responsible for the organisation of midwifery care to meet these needs.
* Use advanced decision-making skills to utilize all available resources to deliver highly complex individualised outpatient care effectively and efficiently in a timely manner.
* Takes overall responsibility for acting on abnormal results. This includes communicating sensitive, complex information on abnormal test results and planning and delivering the follow-up care.
* To be accountable for the leadership and development of the Maternity support Workers and in conjunction with the Public Health midwife ensures competency training needs and requirements are met.
* Facilitate Baby Friendly Accreditation of the unit with the midwifery and support team.
* To lead the Trust Ward accreditation.
Person Specification
* Registered Midwife with current NMC Registration.
* A degree in Midwifery or health-related subject.
* Previous relevant experience at band 6.
* Working towards Masters level study or equivalent or prepared to undergo.
* Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise workload.
* Expert knowledge, clinical skills, and experience in the area of practice.
* Thorough understanding of contemporary nursing issues.
